Assam bleeds before Assembly polls; 8 BSF jawans killed, 5 Congress men injured


Assam bleeds again. Bombs and bullets threatens to bury the hope of peace in the poll bound state. After a brief silence, the anti-talk faction of NDFB and ULFA roared again. Eight BSF personnel were killed and 5 Congress men have been injured in two seperate strike by the banned insurgent outfit on Monday.


At least eight BSF personnel were killed and the same number injured on Monday in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Kokrajhar district. Th e Bodo outfit used automatic weapons to ambush the convoy of the BSF in remote Ultapani forest area near the Indo-Bhutan border.


The BSF jawans were killed on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Some of the eight injured jawans were rushed to the Hospital at Bongaigaon, while others were taken to Kokrajhar civil hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Bijoy Kumar, S K Sharma, Arabinda Dere, Bolaram Lamba, Santa Ramthree, Naresh Kumar, Kuber Bora and Hira Singh.


A combing operation have been launched by the security forces, including the Army along the Indo-Bhutan border, to nab the culprits. The patrol was on way from Bangladoba in Chirang district of Assam to Ultapani in Kokrajhar when it was ambushed.


Hours after this attack, ULFA lobbed a powerful EID at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati leaving 5 perosns injured. The incident took place at around 6-55 in the evening with a huge sound when party spokesman Mehdi Alom Bora was sitting at his chamber. Kalyan Gogoi, Akhsyay Rajkhowa and Ranjan Bora were also left injured in the blast. Mehdi Alom Bora’s condition is critical who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.


Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who arrived in Guwahati from Delhi rushed to the GMCH immediately after the incident and visited the injured persons. Gogoi also visited the incident spot and instructed the district administration to firmly deal with the situation. Several other political parties also have criticized the banned insurgent outfit for the blast.


Meanwhile, ULFA has claimed the responsibilities of the blast and threatened to continue these attack. In an e-mail statement sent to media, Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said that this attach is simply a message to Congress. The blast took place a day after the ruling party announced the names of 118 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.


It may be noted that ULFA threatened to target the Congress parties in rank and file for splitting the outfit. But the government downplayed the threat.

Yet another incident of suicide rocked Guwahati on Wednesday. It took place in Christanbasti. Identified as Jintu Phukan, the youth who worked with a shop in Fancy Bazar area hanged himself inside his rent room.
A college girl in Ujanbazar area in Guwahati committed suicide sending shockwaves in the city. Identified as Navanita Chakarbartty, the girl who hailed from Nalbari hanged herself inside her room at a girls hostel. She had a brilliant academic career who was doing medical coaching course.
Amid repeated incidents of extortion in Chirang district, security forces claimed to have caught a hardcore NDFB(S) militant on Wednesday.He was caught during an intensified operation in the wee hours from Shantipur area along the Indo-Bhutan border. A 9 MM pistol has been seized from them. 
ABSU makes it clear that the movement for separate Bodoland would not halt till the demand is met.Talking to reporters, ABSU President Promod Boro said that it was their constitutional rights and that they were demanding it within the ambit of the Indian constitution under Article 2 & 3.He said that the recent tripartite talk with the Centre was healthy. He has expressing his good expectation said that the next round tripartite talk to be held in October. The centre had expressed gesture on discussing on Bodoland issue. 
Garo National Liberation Army militants killed three people including a women along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday.The incident occurred when a group of five armed militants stormed the Garodoba village in southwest Garo Hills district  bordering Assam and shot dead 32-year-old Sridina A. Sangma and 42-year-old Anirud Hajong. Then the militants fled from the spot. A massive manhunt is on to nab these militants. 
Five minor boys have been arrested for allegedly gang raping  a 12-year-old at Guwahati. The incident took place at Hatigaon area in the city on Sunday.The girl was gang-raped near her home on at night in the absence of her mother who was a daily wage earner. The five boys aged between 12 to 16 years allegedly called her outside the house. Her mother lodged the FIR at the Basistha police station. All the five boys have been taken into custody. They would be produced in the Juvenile Court here on Wednesday. After medical examination, she was sent to the State Home for Women for her rehabilitation.
Assam joins Viswakarma puja celebrations with a colourful festive spirit across the state on Tuesday.Puja offerings began in the morning before the idols of the Lord Viswakarma in the industrial units, factories and technical institutes. Viswakarma puja was observed in assamtimes campus where its employees and family members are offering pujas to the god of construction.
