International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.

In a most shocking incident, a former bureaucrat died after he slipped from a moving train in West Bengal on Saturday. The incident took place near Shamuktala station in the neighbouring state where retired Water Resources Department secretary Dilip Kumar Chetia was killed after he fell from the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express. According to eyewitness, Chetia fell from the train as he was standing at the door of the moving train. His son Hrisiraj Chetia identified the body on Sunday at the Alipurduar District Hospital where the body was taken for post mortem.
The ongoing drive to evict the illegal settlers in the water bodies has received a major boost when the authorities have deployed more machines to demolish the concrete structures and huts on Sunday. According to information, the additional machines have been deployed in the eviction drive on the National Highway No 37 from Jalukbari to Khanapara on Sunday. More excavators are expected to be deployed in a day or two to dredge the Bharalu, Basistha, Bahini and Silsako rivers. The eviction team on Friday used excavators to clear over 700 metres of drains between the river Basistha Chariali and Koinadhara.

Thousands of students took out a huge human chain in Guwahati on Saturday to reiterate their demands to complete the 4-lane National Highway at an earlier date. Talking to Assam Times, senior AASU leaders said that they won’t resort to road blockade to harass the common people during the human chain in the city. They said that they are disappointed to have observed that only in Assam, a central government project is allowed to move at a snail’s pace. Stunned by the revelations of a section officials having close touch with some illegal settlers in Guwahati, Dispur is ready to probe the allegations. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who addressed a press conference in Dispur on Friday sad that his government will set up an inquiry committee to find out the alleged nexus between officials of different government agencies and encroachers in the capital. The enquiry panel would be set up soon to see the nexus between officials of different bodies. Nobody would be spared if found to be involved in violating the law, said Gogoi.
