International Women’s Day observed at Rangaloo

International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.


On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.


More than three hundred women participants were gathered in a slide presentation based on International Women’s Day celebration theme of the year 2011, ‘Equal access to Education, training and science and technology, pathway to decent work place for women’ Md. Mritunjoy 108 workers took part in the open session and spoke about the first aid- precautionary measures to be taken at emergency.

 In a most shocking incident, a former bureaucrat died after he slipped from a moving train in West Bengal on Saturday. The incident took place near Shamuktala station in the neighbouring state where retired Water Resources Department secretary Dilip Kumar Chetia was killed after he fell from the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express. According to eyewitness, Chetia fell from the train as he was standing at the door of the moving train. The ongoing drive to evict the illegal settlers in the water bodies has received a major boost when the authorities have deployed more machines to demolish the concrete structures and huts on Sunday. According to information, the additional machines have been deployed in the eviction drive on the National Highway No 37 from Jalukbari to Khanapara on Sunday. More excavators are expected to be deployed in a day or two to dredge the Bharalu, Basistha, Bahini and Silsako rivers. The eviction team on Friday used excavators to clear over 700 metres of drains between the river Basistha Chariali and Koinadhara.   
NDFB-S militants have vehemently denied the allegations of their involvement in the Baksa incident where four traders were believed to have been killed on Friday evening. In a statement, the anti-talk faction of the Bodo insurgent outfit blamed it all on the on going crisis within the Congress legislative body.  Angry minority organizations in BTAD areas have blamed dissidence within the Congress legislative body for the Baksa incident where four lemon traders were believed to have been killed on Friday. Talking to Assam Times in Chirang after blocking the National Highway No 31 in the protest against the incident on Friday, AAMSU leaders said that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, his trusted minister Rockybul Hussain and dissident leader Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma cannot ensure safety and security for the minorities. The vociferous protest against the big dams at Gerukamukh has hardly reached the Centre. DoNER minister VK Singh has made it plain and simple on Saturday the protest against the 2,000 MW lower Subansiri hydroelectric power project were never justified.  Thousands of students took out a huge human chain in Guwahati on Saturday to reiterate their demands to complete the 4-lane National Highway at an earlier date. Talking to Assam Times, senior AASU leaders said that they won’t resort to road blockade to harass the common people during the human chain in the city.     They said that they are disappointed to have observed that only in Assam, a central government project is allowed to move at a snail’s pace.  AASU leaders further said that authorities must complete the entire project within the stipulated time-frame.

Amid an uneasy development within the Congress Legislature Party, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi tore apart Siddique Ahmed a day after the border development minister threatened to boycott the upcoming Assam Assembly demanding leadership change. Stunned by the revelations of a section officials having close touch with some illegal settlers in Guwahati, Dispur is ready to probe the allegations.  Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who addressed a press conference in Dispur on Friday sad that his government will set up an inquiry committee to find out the alleged nexus between officials of different government agencies and encroachers in the capital. The enquiry panel would be set up soon to see the nexus between officials of different bodies. Nobody would be spared if found to be involved in violating the law, said Gogoi.
