Noted freedom fighter, writer, social worker and Assam’s former Agriculture and Co-operative Minister between 1967 and 1978 Soneswar Bora passed away at Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital in Golaghat at around 5 am today morning. He was 86 and was suffering from old age ailments for long time. Late Bora played an active role in the Quit India Movement in 1942. He was a close associate of renowned freedom fighter Kushal Konwar. He was an active member of the Socialist Party. During his tenure as a Co-operative Minister he has introduced the system of Co-operative Banking in Assam. Lakhimi Gaonlia Bank and Pragjyotish Gaonlia Bank, now merged and renamed as Assam Gramin Vikash Bank, were known to be his brain child. He has also pioneered the concept of small tea gardens in Assam. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and various other organizations condoled the death of Soneswar Bora.
