World Diabetes Day at GMCH

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day on 14 Nov ’09, the Department of Endocrinology, Gauhati Medical College organized Health Awareness Programmes at the Endocrinology OPD today from 9-30 AM onwards. The aim of celebrating this day is to create awareness among people about diabetes. The theme of this day this year is “Prevention of Diabetes”. With this theme stress was laid on importance of diet and exercise in the prevention of diabetes and its complications. Childhood diabetes prevention by avoiding obesity was also discussed.


Pharmaceutical companies conducted Free blood Glucose test on 150 patients out of which 6 (Six ) new diabetics were detected (4%). All diabetics were tested for neuropathy. This was followed by an interaction between public and diabetes experts and a discussion on diet and demonstration of Yoga.


Dr Sarojini Dutta Choudhury, HOD; Prof Uma Kaimal Saikia and Dr Dipti Sarma were present as diabetes Expert. Leading diabetes care company Biocon sponsored the programme.

World Diabetes Day was celebrated in GMCH.It was not sponsored by BIOCON only.MNCs like BAYER HEALTH CARE,NOVO NORDISK were also actively participated.

Mired in a controversy, the Assam govt has decided it will ask CBI to probe the rhino poachings in Assam. In a powerful bomb blast one 5 year old child Alima Khatun (age 5) was died on the spot at Koilagaon under Bijni Amguri in Chirang District at around 12:20 PM on 29-04-08. Alima was playing along with the other children in front a house after they arrived from their schools while that tragic incident took place.
