Moktar Hussain, a student of Bholabari High School has set another example to others when he successfully rescued a full grown Barn owl in his school campus on May 22 at 11 am. Talking to this correspondent, Moktar Hussain,a class ten student said that he had spotted the lone owl flying here and there near the school building at around 10 am on that day.He said that taking advantage of its night blindness, a few crows were chasing the helpless bird. Moktar and his friends had been helplessly watching the incident till it landed at the school ground.The student immediately informed Pradyut Das, a teacher of the school. Latter both of them carried the bird to carefully unhurt in a cage to be handed over to the Circle Officer,Kalaigaon.Although ,the Circle Officer was not available that time, Upen Bhatta,Nalini Saharia both employees of Kalaigaon Circle Office and a nature loving youth Hiren Nath brought the matter to the notice of media and forest officials.Latter at the direction of the forest officials the bird was released at its right place same day.
It is to be mentioned that massive destruction of forests in Darrang and Udalguri districts has compelled a few rare species of birds to take shelter in school and government buildings. Unfortunately people with superstition had been killing or selling the birds unnoticed to authorities. Wild life lovers have raised serious concern over the matter and urged the government to issue direction to all institutions and government offices of the state to keep records of such rare birds so that they could be left undisturbed. People also thanked Moktar and Pradyut Das for rescuing the bird.
The carcass of a twelve years old wild elephant (Makhna)found this morning on the bed of Samrang river near India-Bhutan international border.It has caused concern among nature loving people of the district.Eye witnesses said the elephant could have been poisoned somewhere else the previous night.Frequent deaths of wild elephants have now been a serious concern in the district.Udalguri District Journalists Union and Green Society,Udalguri expressed concern at the incident and request forest department to take appropriate action.
