India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. GUWAHATI: KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Friday tore apart the NDA government at the Centre for removing the special category state status for the northeastern states. Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said, "Assam is known for pathetic economic health where there is hardly any process of development. The state has been lagging behind on the infrastructure front. The Centre accorded special category status in 1969 to help the state get more fund. All out against Hindutva culture

GUWAHATI: RTI activist Akhil Gogoi has given hint of a massive agitation in Assam to keep at bay the RSS-BJP sponsored Hindutva culture calling it a huge threat to the state’s social fabric. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, Gogoi, the KMSS leader said the All Indian Kisan Sabha would also be the part of his organization’s statewide agitation to thwart the culture in question. "After being voted to power, BJP has been trying to destroy our age old social fabric in the name of Hindutva which to make Assam another Gujarat which we wont allow to happen. We are fully prepared to fight,” said Gogoi.

GUWAHATI: Brisk preparations are afoot in Guwahati for the BJP rally where party president Amit Shah is sounding panchayat poll bugle on Saturday. Gold seized in Guwahati again

GUWAHATI: Guwahati, the gateway to the north eastern region has become a safe route for gold smuggling these days. Security forces attached to the Northeast Frontier Railway seized twelve pieces of gold worth Rs 70 lakh from a New Delhi bound train on Friday. Acting on a tip off, a team of railway police raided two passengers from the Rajdhani Express just before it departing the city in the morning and seized the gold biscuits brought from Dimapur. Later, the duo were taken to the hospital since they brought the biscuits in the question in their rectum.     

BTC Secretariat catches fire

KOKRAJHAR: Public properties worth several lakh along with many crucial documents reduced to ashes when a devastating the BTC secretariat caught fire in Kokrajhar on Friday. The fire which is believed to have originated from electric short circuit ravaged a portion of the ground floor in the wee hours. Five fire fighters took around four hours to bring the situation under control. The extent of damage has yet to be assessed.
