India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Missing prof’s body found

Dr Bhagawan Goswami’s body was recovered in Panbazar nine days after the Cotton College professor went missing from Chandmari in Guwahati. His body was spotted floating on the river Brahmaputra just behind the Deputy Commission’s old residence in the afternoon. Price hike in the time of bihu

Dissidence a drama: BJP

Assam state BJP called the dissidence against chief minister Tarun Gogoi a drama to cover up the failure on all fronts.Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Sunday, state party president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the growing dissidence was nothing but a drama required by the government to cover up the misdeeds and multiple failures.   He said that these drama would have little impact on the people.

CM takes on Goala

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday dared Dinesh Prasad Goala to make public the copy of a resolution brought against him in the last special CLP meeting in Dispur.Gogoi made the open challenge a day after the former minister openly revolted against the chief minister alleging simmering discontent within the party legislators.But Gogoi told the reporters that the special CLP meeting never brought any no-trust motion against him. The CLP meet on October 19 in Dispur resolved to mend the dissidence and pledged to unitedly fight the upcoming general polls to ensure 12 seats out of 14.

Dissidence: Gogoi backs Himanta

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that he would welcome any move by a section of sitting ministers to quit to pave the way for other aspirants.The chief minister disclosed it to the reporters in Beltola on Sunday a day after his education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced his move to quit the office after the Lok Sabha polls to accommodate other ministerial aspirants.Talking to reporters in Beltola, Gogoi said that dissidence would stay. Assam state BJP on Sunday alleged a nefarious Congress conspiracy to foil the Narendra Modi’s rally in February.Talking to reporters in Guwahati in the afternoon, state party president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the Assam Government was preparing to hold the teacher eligibility test on the day of Narendra Modi’s rally. “its nothing but a conspiracy to foil the Modi rally in Guwahati,,” Sonowal said. Leopard killed in mob attack

An irate mob in Golaghat killed a leopard after the animal attacked six person at a tea garden on Sunday. The incident took place at Jalan Tea Estate in the morning when the full grown leopard suddenly pounded on a garden worker as he was walking at around 6 in the morning. Then the animal managed to sneak into the tea estate injured six persons in six different incidents of attack during two hours. Then the local residents-----mostly the tea garden workers chased the leopard and was beaten to death. Forest officials reached the spot only after the leopard died in the mob attack. All the six injured people are battling for life in the Jorhat Medical College Hospital.
