India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. PM to meet NE CMs

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to address the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday.Dr Singh is expected to review the major infrascture projects in the entire region. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi who is camping in New Delhi is assessing the situation on telephonic conversation with Khagen Sarma.

Mahanta slams Gogoi

AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Sunday question Tarun Gogoi’s moral rights to continue as chief minister in view of his failure to rein in the militant outfits. Mahanta blamed it all on the chief minister saying that these orgy of uneasy incidents suggest Gogoi failure on the law and order front.

NDFB(S) attack continues

NDFB-S continues to spread terror tentacles in BTAD areas forcing the authorities to launch combing operations against the Bodo militant outfit. The anti-talk faction of the outfit shot dead one more person in Mongoljhar. With this the toll in the militant attack during the last 30 hours has reached 8.    

Seat 14; aspirants 138

Assam Congress in deep grip of poll mood. Altogether 138 candidates are waiting to contest from 14 Lok Sabha polls. Rajiv Bhawan sources told assamtimes that Guwahati seat gets maximum 18 aspirants. Seventeen aspirants have applied to contest from Barpeta. Nagaon, Barpeta and Silchar have 16 aspirants each. Union minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar is likely to be fielded from his home constituency Dibrugarh as there is no other aspirant for the seat. Ranee Narah, BK Handique, and Biren Singh Engti have applied for their home constituencies Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Diphu respectively. The state Congress committee will meet on Tuesday to screen the aspirants.

NDFB-S on killing spree

NDFB’s anti-talk faction continues to unleash terror in BTAD areas. The Bodo militant outfit shot dead one more person in Chirang district on Saturday.The attack took place at Panbari along the Indo-Bhutan border in the evening where four others persons have been injured. The injured have been undergoing treatment.The incident took place hardly 24 hours after the militants massacred passengers from a Jonai bound bus from Siliguri in Kokrajhar. This is apart from the killing of a barber in Udalguri.

Poll mood grips Rajiv Bhawan

Rajiv Bhawan is throbbing with the pre poll activities these days. Tickets aspirants are making long queue to file the application on Saturday on the third and last day.Except Deep Gogoi, all sitting MPs are applying for tickets this time. Gogoi did not file any application a day after Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav Gogoi filed his papers for Kaliabor seat. Captain Robin Bordoloi’s brother Bolin Bordoloi and minister Akon Bora’s son Manash Bora along with two others are applying for ticket from Guwahati.Apart from sitting MP Bjoy Krishna Handiqui, Samir Gogoi and Nibha Konwar also want to contest from Jorhat seat. Operation against NDFB-S: DGP

A full scale operation is set to begin in the BTAD areas. This was what new DGP Khagen Sarma told reporters in Guwahati after NDFB(S) shot dead 6 people in two separate shoot outs during the last 24 hours.Sarma said that the security forces are all set to launch the operation to flush out the disturbing elements in the BTAD areas. Earlier, Sarma apprised chief minister Tarun Gogoi of the incidents where militants killed 5 bus passengers in Kokrajhar forcing the government to seek additional forces to contain the situation in the run upto the Republic Day celebration.

Strike fear before R-Day

Militant outfits are likely to strike again to make is presence felt in the run up to the Republic Day celebration.This has forced Dispur to approach the Centre seeking more additional forces to contain the law and order situation that might turn volatile. Sarbananda blames Gogoi

State BJP unit blames it all on chief minister TarunGogoi for the Kokrajhar incident where NDFB(S) faction shot dead five Hindi-speaking passengers of a Siliguri-Jonai bus in Serfangguri on Friday night,Talking to reporters on Saturday in New Delhi, state unit president SarbanandaSonowal said that these incidents do take place at regular intervals only because of Gogoi who has been failing to deal with the law and order situation in the state.
