India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Land deal to benefit Assam: Gogoi

Amid total bandh over the Indo-Bangla boundary ratification pact, chief minister Tarun Gogoi asserted that the deal would help the state gain a considerable area of land---now in adverse possession.       Talking to reporters in Dispur, he said that the area the state would gain would be more that what Bangladesh is set to get which is why, the opposition party in the neighbouring country  is dead opposed to it.                 Gogoi said that the BJP leaders knew it very well in Delhi and have not opposed it.

NRC update process begins

Process begins across the state to update NRC. This was what chief minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Dispur on Friday.              Gogoi said that altogether 1000 camps would be set up initially for the 36 month long exercise.    According to Gogoi, the papers would reach the citizens by December next year.

Violence mars Assam bandh

A sting of untoward seems to have marred the statewide Assam bandh in protest against the Indo-Bangla land deal.         BJP leaders and workers have come out to the streets in many areas to enforce the bandh call. Some of the supporters staged protest by burning tyres on the streets. A section of the supporters disrupted the normal of traffic movement by pelting stones at the vehicles. In many places the BJP leaders and workers courted arrest for buring the effigies of prime minister and chief minister for striking the land deal with Bangladesh where Assam would have to shed hundreds of acres of land.

Wanton rhinos creat terror

Two estranged rhinos have unleashed no less panic in Lakhimpur and Majuli these days.                 A wanton rhino from Kaziranga reached the river island and unleashed a reign of terror the Garhmur area. Forest officials who have been following the animal find it difficult to drive it to the safe habitate.   Anothor rhino sneaked into humen habitate in Lakhimpur creating panic among the local residents. The confused animal is being monitored by a team of forest officials.           The story of rhino terror refuses to end here. Assam bandh paralyzing

Normal life stands totally paralyzed on Friday following a 12 hour statewide bandh in protest against the Indo-B'desh boundary ratification bill tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.   Streets wore a deserted look in the absence vehicles as soon as the BJP-sponsored bandh began across the state. Shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed from 6 in the morning.  The UPA government tabled the bill for constitutional amendment in the light of the boundary ratification deal signed in Dhaka by prime minister Manmohan Singh and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina two years back. Land deal dharna in Delhi

AGP and BJP MPs from the state staged seperate dharnas in protest agains the Indo-Bangla land boundary rati fication bill a day after it was tabled in the Rajya Sabha.               AGP MPs namely Birendra Prasad Baishya and Joseph Toppo staged dharna in front of the ministry of external affairs in protest agaist the bill in question.           They warned external affairs minister Salman Khursid of dire consequence if the bill is not cancelled.          BJP MPs also staged dharna at the Jantar Mantor and vowed the remain dead opposed against the bill.

AGP observes black day

The Asom Gana Parishad on Thursday observed black day across the state a day after the UPA government tabled the Indo Bangla land ratification bill in the Rajya Sabha.              Party leaders and workers staged dharna in the district and subdivisional headquarters in protest against the deal that pave the way for lose of hundreds of acares of land to Bangladesh.

Uncertainty persists over Indo-B’desh deal

Once again the Indo-Bangladesh Land Demarcation Bill runs into an uncertain future.An uproarious scenes in the Rajys Sabha put on hold the controversial deal where Assam would have to lose its plot to the neighbouring country.AGP and Trinamool Congress Mps tore the bill as soon External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid introduced the Bill in the Rajya Sabha Bill on Wednesday.TMC alleged that the Bill was introduced through the back door by the Congress.The Bill provides for exchange of certain territories between India and Bangladesh and demarcation of the border as per the 1974 agreement between the then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi and her Bangaldeshi counterpart.
