India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Arrear talks on Feb 18

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has agreed to talk to the state government employees to break the deadlock over their arrear amounts.Sources told Assam Times that Gogoi has invited the Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad for talks on February 19.With this assurance, the employees union has called off the agitation. But they made it clear that if the talks fail to end the impasse, they would have no option but to resume the strike.  The employees union has been demanding arrear for 33 months. A three member BJP panel set up to probe the voting anomalies in the Rajya Sabha polls quizzed party legislator Prasanta Phukan to unearth the truth.  Led by former legislator Mison Ranjan Das, the panel quizzed the legislature party leader at the Assembly chamber for around three hours on Thursday.The panel members asked Phukan what forced him to insert the ballot paper into the box without getting it checked by the concerned agent on duty in the Rajya Sabha polls last week.The party leadership consider it a violation of party whip issued a few days before the polls. Protesters flogged in Last Gate

Several people have been injured when security forces sprang upon the protesters at the Dispur Last gate on Thursday.Home guards, NREGA employees along with several organizations have been staging dharna for the last three days to draw the government. The Assam government has proposed yet another bridge on the river Bramaputra.In his vote on account, chief minister Tarun Gogoi has proposed a bridge the river Brahmaputra linking Disangmukh to Tekeliphuta in Dhemaji district.He said that the government would introduce the much hyped bill to appoint a Lukyukt in the next session of the assembly.

Gogoi tables vote on account

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi tabled a vote of account on the floor of the House on Thursday.Gogoi, who holds the finance portfolio, has proposed a Rs 28,467 cr in the vote of account from April 1 to September 30.  But the vote on account is more than a full fledged budget in terms of soaps and promises just three months before the Lok Sabha polls.The chief minister has proposed more fund for 18 development boards apart from special funds for Rs 1,000 crore for the flood ravaged Dhemaji.  Gogoi could not tabled a  full fledged budget in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

HSLC exams begin

Judges’ Field regained
