India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Erosion in Jorhat AGP

Horticulture college in Nalbari

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the state’s first ever horticulture college in at a function in Nalbari.In his address at the function presided over by agriculture minister Nilomoni Sendeka, Gogoi hoped that the college would help the state bring a boomtime in horticulture.Deka said that the government has sanctioned Rs 25 crore for the college and that the session of the college would begin soon. The college construction is expected to end by the next year.      

AGP leader quits party

AGP leader and former MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami on Sunday quit the regional party.Gowasmi, the three time party legislator from Jorhat Assembly constituency has already sent his resignation letter as the party’s primary member to president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.Goswami sent the resignation letter a day after he met the party members in Jorhat on Saturday. The development is a staggering blow for the regional party three months before the Lok Sabha polls.

Gecko seized, smuggler held

Despite stringent laws, wild animals are being smuggled from Guwahati. Basistha police arrested a person from Beltola area and seized two gecko snakes from his possession.Identified as Devendra Singh, the person from Manipur was held from a hotel after he received two gecko snakes on Saturday night.The geckos were seized hardly 12 hours after police seized from Koliabhumura area and held a youth from Manipur on way to Guwahati.

1 killed in road mishap

One person was killed and three others have been injured when a vehicle hit the post of a bridge in Morigaon district on Saturday night.The incident took place at Dharamtul on the National Highway No 37 when the vehicle carrying four people to Jajori in Nagaon met with the mishap. One person died on the spot while three others were rushed to the hospital.  

WB gets top KLO militants

The West Bengal police have arrested two top KLO militants hours after they were released by their Nepal counterparts on Friday.Identified as Tom Adhikary and Niambor Rajbanshi, the KLO militants would be produced before a court on Sunday. They were captured along the Indo-Nepal border on February 4.

Poaching revisits Kaziranga

Narrow escape for 250 IITians

At least 250 IITians had a narrow escape when the ferry carrying them struck on the river Brahmaputra on Saturday.According to reports, the ferry which brought them back to North Guwahati from a picnic spot suddenly struck at sand in the middle of the mighty river. The wind that blew in the afternoon compounded the problem.It needed the rescue team and the ferry men three hours to bail out the IIT students from the jaws of death.
