India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Abducted oil company officer appeals CM Sonowal to save his life

Congress forms alliance with AIUDF

Laika Dadhia's hapless people cry for help

The hapless people of Lakia Dadhia, who became homeless after a massive erosion, have appealed help from people for survival. In December last year they have started a sit-in-demonstration demanding rehabilitation. 15 MLAs & Ministers have criminal cases

Atleast  15 MLAs and Ministers in the current Assam assembly have criminal cases registered against them, said the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR). As per reports, the ADR has analysed the affidavits filed by the MLAs ahead of the 2016 assembly elections and bye elections and revealed the sensational data. The analysis further stated the cases registered against the elected representatives includes murder, theft, rioting, cheating among others. Most the cases are still pending, report said.

Assam farmers to join #FarmerProtest in Delhi

A group of farmers from Assam has, reportedly, reached Delhi to join ongoing anti-farm laws protest near the National Capital. The farmers are the members of the All India Farmers' Associatio. As per reports, the Assam farmers' group consists of more than one hundred members. Ripun Bora slams BJP govt over price rise

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) president Ripun Bora today lambasted the state BJP-led government for failing to control the price rise. In a press statement Bora alleged that the price rise has dampened bhogali bihu festivity for a large section of the people of the state. “BJP-led government has failed to control the exorbitant price rise of the essential food items. Amid day-to-day busy schedule the indigenous populace of Assam are preparing to celebrate the Bhogali bihu, one of the three national festivals of the state.
