Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

GUWAHATI: A huge hailstorm accompanied by thunder and lightening on Thursday night heavily disrupted normal lives in many parts of the state on Friday. Silchar: The state registered the loss of it's first COVID19 patient when Faizul Islam Borbhuyan passed away at the Silchar Medical College Hospital on Friday. Borbhuyan, the 28th patient COVID 19 patient, who was around 65 years of age,  shown some strange symptoms and was rushed to SMCH a couple of years back from Hailakandi. According to health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he died in the week hours since he was having some breathing problem since he was admitted to the hospital.  Notably as many as 24 patients who have tested negative a number of times might be released on Friday or Saturday.

Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front has stood by Aminul Islam after a lower court in Nagaon jailed the party from Dhing on Tuesday. Talking to media state party president Champak Kalita said that the party will challenge Islam's judicial custody in the appropriate court of law.  Kalita said that Islam had done no wrong and only what he said was his only apprehension and that he was arrested only because of an opposition party MLA who has been critical of the government for it's many anti people policies.  Islam was arrested after interrogation by police charging him with spreading rumour on the quarantine of some people apprehending COVID19 infection. 
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Assam Government and Centre asking for an affidavit on a plea to release the detention camp inmates who have already spent 2 years. Taking up a petition on Tuesday,  the country''s  top court said that the issued could be settled only after considering the response from the Centre and state.  The petitioner has strongly urged the court to direct the authorities to release half of the inmates in view of the killer COVID19 outbreak which could claim their lives since they have been detained inside a room. Nagaon: A local court in  Nagaon has sent Aminul Islam to 14 days judicial custody on Tuesday after the police arrested the AIUDF MLA for spreading false rumour on quarantine. When the police produced the MLA from Dhing before the Chief Judicial Magistrate producing evidence against him, Islam had no  convincing statement to counter it and then he was thrown to the Nagaon Central Jail. Nagaon: Police have arrested AIUDF MLA from Dhing Aminul Islam charging him with misleading the people in the time of COVID-19 outbreak. Guwahati: The North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Ltd (NERAMAC) has inducted Manoj Kumar Das in its helms at a time when enterprising fraternity in the northeastern region are having a tough time. Das joined as managing director in the Central Public Sector Enterprise in addition to his current assignment in the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) as Deputy General Manager. Guwahati: The figure of COVID19 cases has reached 20 with 4 more people tested positive on Friday. According state health minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, of these three from Nalbari while the remaining one is from North Salmara. He said that all patients who have travel history to Nizamuddin in Delhi are now stable.
