Noted Educationist Binita Barua Passes Away at 82
The educational fraternity mourns the loss of Professor Binita Barua, a distinguished educationist who passed away at the age of 82 on March 4th at Health City Hospital Guwahati. She was a retired HoD of Economics at Handique Girls College and survived by two sons, two daughters-in-law, two grandsons, and numerous friends and relatives.
Born in Asansol to the illustrious Barooah family of Uzanbazar riverside, Binita Barua was a brilliant student who completed her post-graduation in Economics from Guwahati University. She joined Handique College as a lecturer in 1963 and retired as the HoD of Economics in 2000. Her dedication to teaching and her simple, dignified way of life earned her the love and respect of her colleagues and students.
In addition to her academic achievements, Binita Barua was involved in various social activities and was an active member of Lions Club of Narangi. She was also renowned for her culinary skills and was one of the first women to drive a vehicle in Guwahati city in the 1960s.
Her demise was deeply mourned by the staff and students of Handique Girls College and Assam Retired College Teachers Association. Her cremation at Navagraha crematorium was largely attended by friends, relatives, and admirers, leaving the educational fraternity under a pall of gloom.

Various local organizations on Saturday called off the rail blockade at Chapormukh scheduled at Raha demanding AAIMS in Nagaon district.Local leaders told Assam Times that they decided to withdraw the proposed blockade in view of the assurance from the Deputy Commissioner that he would take up the issue with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
