UDALGURI: Journalist should fight for their due rights.Media as a fourth pillar if democracy has a great role to play in a democratic nation like India. The journalists  highlight the problems of common people but the plight of journalists remains unaddressed.This was observed by Paneri MLA,Kamali Basumatari while addressing the working journalists at a special felicitation programme here at Presidency Junior College in Tangla of Udalguri district on Sunday. The four times legislator further stated that the common people  have a wrong notion that journalists are privileged class but in ground reality they face lots of hurdles from getting due wages to criticism by section of people. "I am always open to suggestions of the public amd media.The positive criticism by media encourages me to work better. I have always fought for women and child rights and media have helped me highlight them." She added.Speaking on the ocassion journalist Gunajit Das said," Media though considered four pillars of democracy has not been duly recognized and  the journalist given due recognition. He lamented the fact that the Majithia Wage Board suggestions regarding wages to journalists have been largely ignored by many media houses.The event organized by Udalguri district committee Assam Press Correspondents Union(APCU) in collaboration of Tangla Press Club feted 18 journalists of Udalguri district who been received accredition cards by the State Information and Public Relations (IPR). The event also awarded four journalists with Young Media Persons Award namely Bapan Sarma,Diganta Kumar Sarma,Bhuban Thapoliya and Gunajit Das. The programme was attended by Udalguri AKRSU,President, Hemanta Bora Koch; senior journalists Imran Hussain,Naba Kumar Deka; noted citizen,Likhan Das,Principal of Presidency Junior College,Mohan Das. The event also witnessed the felicitation of a number of local newspaper hawkers.

In yet another tragic incident, a youth was trampled to death by a loner wild jumbo in Paneri Tea Estate in Udalguri at about 10 pm on Saturday evening. The deceased has been identified as Jaichan Kujur (25). Locals told that Kujur was confronted by the loner while he was on his way back home. It is pertinent here to mention that the man-elephant conflict has taken an ugly turn along the Indo-Bhutan border villages in Udalguri district claiming as 7 human lives and 8 elephant in 2017-18.
