No Naga deal will be allowed to hurt Manipur sentiment: UCM
Any peace deal between the Centre and NSCN (IM) that affects the sentiments of the people of Manipur will be opposed “tooth and nail,” the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has reiterated.
“We’ve the sneaking suspicion that the Government of India may make another move similar to the ‘Framework Agreement’ which was a furtive step,” UCM president Johnson Elangbam said a press meet at committee office, Lamphel here on Monday.
He said the Centre and NSCN (IM) have been conducting all moves to end the over six decades old Naga political issue and warned of another June 18 Uprising in Manipur in case the Government of India makes any attempt to hurt the state’s interests in resolving the Naga problem.
“Such deals will never be accepted by the people of Manipur,” Johnson said. The UCM leader mentioned the Assam government’s fresh declaration against any move to distort the map of that state in the process to end the protracted Naga issue.
Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are apprehensive about the ongoing peace talks between the Centre and NSCN (IM) that aimed at ending the long-running Naga insurgency. The three northeastern states have the apprehension that their boundaries will be changed if the key demand of Naga integration raised by the Naga outfit is fulfilled.
The UCM president Johnson Elangbam expressed confidence that the Government of India will keep its word that all stakeholders will be taken on board before any final agreement is reached with NSCN (IM). He also mentioned the repeated promise by the Manipur government to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur.
On the other hand, UCM president Johnson Elangbam expressed unhappiness over the Kuki state demand raised by Kuki militant groups under suspension of operation (SoO) involving the Centre and Manipur government.
“UCM condemns the move of the United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO) that could threaten the integrity and social fabric which is becoming increasingly visible,” he said. The UPF and KNO signed SoO in 2013 and are on tripartite talks with the two governments since then.
He appealed to all concerned, including the Kuki civil society, to forge unity among communities by staying away from such a move of the Kuki militant outfits to assert one community's interest.
