War like situation in Raha

An escalating tension grips Raha when the authorities deployed heavy security forces on Wednesday a day before the road blockade demanding the proposed AIIMS in this central Assam place instead of Changsari in the outskirt of Guwahati.

Apprehending civil violence during the proposed blockade of the National Highway No 37 on Thursday, the district authorities clamed 144 CrPC in the entire area prohibiting public gathering and use of weapons in public places.

But the AIIMS Demand Committee leaders, supported by many local organizationa have confirmed that they will stage a peaceful protest to reiterate their demand.

“We will stage peaceful protest. It would be our democratic protest to reiterate our demand,” said local AASU leader Sanjay Kumar Kakoti.

Tonoya Borthakur, s local college student told Assam Times that the government should listen to the voice of protest.

“A super speciality hospitality is need of the hour in central Assam. Accordingly, it was proposed. But under mysterious circumstances the venue has been shifted,” said the college student in Raha.

Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed by the authorities prohibiting assembly of more than four people at any place. "In connection with Highway blockade and 10 hours Middle Assam Bandh by Middle Assam AIIMS Demand Committee (  MAADC ) , district administration has imposed restrictions on assemble of any group comprising four or more people to refrain them from taking out any rally, procession in entire Nagaon district from today to an uncertain period of time,"  said Samsher Singh, DC Nagaon to this correspondent.

He said prohibition will remain in force till further orders and failure to comply with it will lead to to prosecution under 188 of Indian Penal Code ( IPC). 

In a related development the Kolkata bench of the National Green Tribunal on Wednesday reserved its final judgment till July 15 on the proposed AIIMS in Changsari, where construction is prohibited.

Last  year, one person died and several others injured when security forces resorted to gun firing to disperse a huge crowd who blocked the road demanding the hospital in Raha.

Rail blockade called off in Chapormukh

Tiwa polls give majority for Cong

Congress sweeps the Tiwa autonomous council polls in Nagaon and Morigaon six months ahead of the assembly polls.The ruling party got absolute majority in the Tiwa autonomous council polls in the two districts with 15 seats out of 31.Tiwa Aikyo Manch got 9 seats while BJP had to remain satisfied with 3 seats followed by AGP in one seat. Bike rallly for AIIMS at Raha

Hundreds of bikers hit the streets in Raha on Saturday demanding the proposed AIIMS hardly a month after Dispur gave the Centre the green signal to set up it in North Guwahati.  Thousands of people in the entire area came out in support of the prgramme took out by the Biker Association of Raha reiterating the demand to shift the AIIMS venue from North Guwahati. Bereaved Raha

Cutting across political affiliation people of all walks of life deeply condoled the unexpected demise of Dr APJ Kalam. Sit in stir for AIIMS at Raha

To press their demand for an AIIMS here, the senior citizens of Raha and neighbouring places supported by the members from other civil society groups today staged a sit -in-stir at Raha Chariali , led by Mohan Hazarika, president of the Raha senior citizens association.A two hour bandh was also observed from 9 to 11 am by the business community here protesting state government's decision to shift the AIIMS venue from Raha to North Guwahati.

Rail blockade in Raha

Movement of all trains came to a grinding halt on Thursday when local residents in large number blocked the rails in Raha demanding the proposed AIIMS in central part of the state.Raising slogans demanding an immediate shift in the AIIMS venue, the protesters squatted on the rail tracks at 8 in the morning forcing several trains to stop for three hours.Later the blockade was called off with an warning that it would resume if the demand fails to reach the authorities.

Girl gangraped in Nagaon

In yet another incident that sends sensation across the state, four miscreants gang raped a girl in nagaon district on Sunday night.The gory incident took place Rupohi in the district where the miscreants caught the girl and raped before being dumped on the roadside. Villagers rescued the victim in critical condition early in the morning. She is battling for life at the hospital where she was admitted by villagers. Policemen probing the case are believed to have been identified the miscreants.    

Guwahati AIIMS draws protest in Raha

Normal road service came to a grinding halt for several hours in Raha when thousands of people blocked the National Highway for not allowing to set up AIIMS in central Assam.With banners and festoons in their hands demanding AIIMS, thousands of people started pouring on the highway forcing many buses and other vehicles to remain stranded for more than five hours.     Talking to Assam Times the protestors said, “We have been demanding  AIIMS in Nagaon district.
