SC concern over border influx

The Supreme Court is quite unhappy with the alleged unabetted influx into Assam from across the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Hearing a set of petitions on Tuesday pertaining to infiltration, NRC, Assam Accord, Citizenship amendment move, a division bench of the court comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice SK Kaul called the alleged non stop infiltration an external aggression.

If it is allowed yo continue the state would be overcrowded by those who have no rights to live on the soil of Assam, the bench observed fearing  that unabetted infiltration will ultimately result in the erosion of culture.

The bench asked the Gauhati High court to expedite the appointment of judges in the foreigners tribunals where the government would make these operational within 60 days of appointment.

In the same breath, the apex court asked the Centre to expedite barb wire fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Before that the court agreed to set up a constitutional bench to take up a bunch of pleas relating a number of confronting issues to be heard on day to day basis from May 11 this year.
