The rising casualties of man-elephant conflict in Udalguri district has been a cause of concern in the recent years. A memorandum was submitted to the Department of Forest BTC government through the DFO Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri on Thursday. The memorandum was submitted on behalf of the effected villagers by Nabajyoti Baruah. The memorandum stated 78 people lost their lives that during 2012-16 while 2029 houses were destroyed by wild pachyderm and 865 hectares of paddy fields destroyed.
The memorandum further stated that the destruction of forests and encroachment of forest land by humans for their personal use has made the wild elephants sneak into human habitation in search of food. The memorandum urged the BTC forest authorities to adopt necessary measures like building watch towers, providing equipment like torches to villagers.
The memorandum urged to provide food to the wild elephants plantation of trees with the help of villagers in man-elephant conflict zone of Bornadi Wildlife sanctuary, Khalingduar Reserve Forest and Neuli, proposed wildlife sanctuary of Udalguri district.
