In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Simmering discontent seems to have taken centrestage within the ruling party after AICC announced the candidates for 10 Lok Sabha polls.Led by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, over a dozen MLAs and ministers have been camping in New Delhi to get their own candidates fielded in the polls.The dissident group has not been success while AICC election committee has cleared the names in favour of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita.Miffed at this development, the dissident legislators are all set to call on Sonia Gandhi revealing their grudge.  

Resentment in Dibrugarh BJP

BJP has yet to announce the Lok Sabha poll candidate for Dibrugarh. But discontent is simmering among the party activists.A huge number of party workers openly criticized the move to field Bhabesh Sarma from the crucial Lok Sabha seat this time.Talking to Assam Times, a section of the party workers said that they would not cooperate Sarma who is a dark horse within the party.They want Prasant Phukan as their candidate from Dibrugarh saying that Phukan has a strong network in the party’s grass root level. 

AICC announces 10 candidates

Union ministers Pawan Singh Ghatowar and Ranee Narah will contest from Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur respectively in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.This was what AICC formally announced on Saturday. DU students stage dharna

Hundreds of Delhi University students from Assam staged dharna in front of the Assam Bhawan demanding immediate release of Akhil Gogoi a day after the KMSS president was remanded to jail.With banners and festoons in the hands, the varsity students criticized the Tarun Gogoi and his government alleging attempt the gag the voice of protest.They staged dharna in front of the Assam Bhawan minutes after the Chief Minister arrived in the building on Saturday.

Terror revisits Naharjan

A reign of terror seems to have revisited Sonitpur district bordering Arunachal Pradesh.A group of miscreants from the neighbouring state stormed into a tiny hamlet at Naharjan area on Friday night and asked the local residents to quit the place early.Police was informed. But the armed fled from the spot before the arrival of police. An uneasy calm has been prevailing in the entire area since the Arunachal Pradesh miscreants shot dead at least 15 local villagers in Chauldhuwa in January.
