Don Bosco statue withdrawn

Finally, the statue of Don Bosco fails to install by the river Brahmaputra in Bharalumukh on Friday.

Amid stiff protest, a group of unidentified persons displaced before installation on Friday morning.    

Later the Don Bosco authorities along with the district administration lifted it away from the spot. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi was scheduled to formally unveil the statue much to utter disappointment and anger of many people in the entire area.

Youth killed in Tinsukia firing

Security forces claimed to have killed an ULFA militant in Tinsukia district  on Saturday. Identified as Lalit Moran, the local youth was suspected to be a militant belonging to the anti-talk faction during a joint operation launched by the Army and police in Duwarmara jungle. Army and police had launched the operation after getting intelligence input regarding the presence of a group of armed men in the area.  But a section of local resident alleged it a fake encounter where the innocent youth was killed.

Aaranyak has expressed its deep concern at the continued poaching of rhinos in different parts of Assam. In first two weeks of the new year already rhinos are poached in Kaziranga, Orang and Manas NP. NFAI restores 9th Assamese film Runumi

The National Film Archives of India (NFAI) has digitally restored an Assamese film made in 1952, whose only print was missing for over 40 years till it was recovered in a village in Assam in March 2010.The film, “Runumi”, written and directed by noted writer-Sattriya dance exponent, the late Suresh Chandra Goswami, has undergone digital audio and video restoration after a painstaking process of manual cleaning at the Restoration Laboratory. Annada Gohain expires

Annada Gohain, a resident of Kharghuli, breathed her last on 19th September 2011 at a private hospital in Guwahati at the age of 81 years. She retired as Additional Director (Agriculture) under Assam Government in 1987. In 1948, she graduated with Chemistry Honours from Cotton College. In 1955, she went to Australia for a special two year Food Technology course conducted by the University of New South Wales under the Colombo Plan.
