It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.

The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

we know or have read many travel related books but "Ontario'r heuj dolisat" is not only a travel experience but is a travel fiction..A great experience as you keep on reading this book and gain new knowledge & issues..we expect many new books from him and wish him success..

Cabinet expansion on the cards

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is in a mood to finalise further expansion of his ministry. Gogoi who is camping in New Delhi is meeting Dr CP Joshi on Friday. Season of rendezvous

One after another Congress leaders met high command apprising them of the prevailing political landscape in Assam hardly a year before the assembly polls.State Congress president Anjan Dutta was the first to met Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi to discuss the party’s poll prospect. Then chief minister Tarun Gogoi met Gandhi to discuss the move to further expand his cabinet with three more ministers. Another Congress leader who called on Sonia Gandhi on Thursday was Akon Bora. The former minister apprised Gandhi of the party’s poll prospect. The Congress president is believed to have listened to him. But will she tell Gogoi to re induct in the ministry? 

Parliament clears land deal bill

After months of intense debate amd controversy Parliament on Thursday cleared the Indo-Bangla land boundary rectification Bill. Lok Sabha cleared it on Thursday a day after the Rajya Sabha approved it.External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj urged the lower House to pass it unanimously as it will send a good message to the neighbouring country.She told the House, "there was no vote against it and there was no abstention (in the Rajya Sabha). It sent a message to Bangladesh that all political parties are one on the issue. Stray incidents mar bandh

Marked by a string of stray incidents the AGP-sponsored 10 hour statewide Assam bandh ends in the afternoon. The bandh which evoked partial response in protest against the Indo-Bangla land swap ended in the afternoon. It had hardly any impact on Guwahati city and Barak valley where the normal life was running as usual. But some stray incidents marred the bandh in many parts of the state. A section of AGP activists enforced the bandh by burning tyres on the road. Some others attacked some school buses. 

Khagen Sarma vs Paresh Baruah

War of words between Khagen Sarma and Paresh Baruah refuses to die down. The ULFA commander in chief took on the state director general of police on Thursday a day after Sarma brushed aside any fresh peace process with any militant outfit. In a telephonic conversation, the ULFA boss contradicted said that if the Centre proceeds to talk to them then Sarma will have no say. Baruah further said that the DGP himself is not aware of what he is doing adding that ULFA-I is fully prepared for unconditional talks with the government. DGP on Wednesday straightly denied any fresh move for peace process with the militant outfit. 

Thunderstorm unleashing terror

A huge thunderstorm unleashed no less reign of terror in many parts of the state leaving 3 people dead in Nagaon and Darrang districts on Thursday wee hours.Accompanied by heavy lightening, the thunderstorm took place in the wee hours ravaging many houses. Telephone and electricity network were left collapsed under the impact of the 30 minute long storm.The uprooted trees blocked a huge portion of the National Highway in Moran, Bokakhat, Nagaon, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. It took several hours for the authorities to clear the road to restore surface communication. 

Incidents mar Assam bandh

A string of untoward incidents marred the AGP-sponsored 10 hour statewide Assam bandh in protest against Indo-Bangla land deal on Thursday.The stray incidents, mostly, took place early in the morning when AGP activists in large numbers came out to the road and burnt down tyres to disrupt surface communication.A section of AGP workers started enforcing the bandh by pelting stones Demow area where several local passengers sustained injury. In Tinsukia district police arrested at least 15 AGP workers when they tried to enforce the bandh. Even the school buses were not spared in some places. The Opposition party called for the bandh in protest against the Indo-Bangla land swap deal...

Social scientist passes away

Dr Amalendu Guha is dead leaving the entire state in a pall of gloom on Thursday.The end came for historian and social scientist at his own residence at 3-45 in the wee hours where he was keeping unwell for the last couple of weeks.Guha, who is known for his thought provoking writings, was born in 1924 in Imphal. As soon as the sad new spread life wild fire his relatives and fans thronged his residence to pay him their last respect. His is known for a number of books in Assamese, English and Bangla including From Planterraj to Swaraj. The lifeless Guha would be taken to GMCH  as he has already donated body for research. 

Gogoi’s date with Sonia, Rahul

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is camping in New Delhi to hold a series of meeting with the party high command on a number of issues.Gogoi who arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, is scheduled to meet Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi where he would apprise them of the press poll scenario after the NDA government ensured the safe passage of the land deal pact in Parliament.Sources told Assam Times in Delhi that Gogoi would discuss the strategies to ensure poll victory for the fourth consecutive term. Go all out against BJP: Gogoi to ministers

Congress will be more aggressive hardly a year before the assembly polls. The party will sharply take on BJP on a number of issues. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the ministers to go all out against BJP to expose the real face of the ruling party at the Centre. Gogoi further has asked his ministers to highlight the U turns on the main issues during the last one year. “We must capitalize the Narendra Modi government’s U turn on the land swap deal. Its time to be more aggressive,” he told the ministers on Wednesday.
