Spotlight: Aahatguri

Have you even been to Aahatguri? Limelight falls again on the huge area in Marigaon district. Hardly a week is left. Aahatguri is gearing up for the buffalo fight. The historic event will begin from January 15 to end on January 16.

Noted writer Gauhati University Professor Noni Gopal Mahanta will open the two days historic event on January 15 morning. Other programmes include serving of Pitha-jalpaan, art competition, Bhagavat recitation on the first day. The second day programme will begin with the lighting of ceremonial lamp. It would be followed by annual buffalo fight from 9 in the morning.

The Ahatguri field has a separate identity in the socio-cultural life of Assam. Apart from being the birth place of Lakshminath Bezbaroa, the entire area is known for the buffalo-fight which began in 1972.

Another rape attempt in Khetri, 1 held

JAGIROAD: Amid an escalating shock and anger over the rape and murder incident in Nagaon, the Khetri police in Morigaon district caught a youth for trying to molest a minor girl on Monday. The incident took place at Kahikuchi near the National Highway No 37 on Sunday evening when the Class VI girl was forcibly taken away to a place by a local youth who raped her and left away. The local residents and family members rescued her and moved the police station with a complaint. Acting on the complaint the police have arrested the accused Raufik Ali.

NAGAON: People thronged in thousands at Nehrubali in Nagaon town demanding Justice for the minor girl in Dhing whom three miscreants gangraped and burnt alive two days back. The entire gathering demanded immediate arrest of the main culprit Zakir Hussain, who is still on the run while two other arrested perpetrators are juvenile. Speakers after speakers in the crowd demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators saying that this measure is the only way to firmly deal with these raising cases of rape and murder. NAGAON: Amid an escalating shock and anger an irate mob vandalized the residence of Zakir Hussain a day after he led the gang who raped and burnt alive a minor girl at Lalung gaon in Batadrawa on Friday. Gangrape and murder rerun in Nagaon

NAGAON: In yet another bizarre incident, miscreants burnt alive a minor girl after being gangraped in Nagaon district sending huge shock and anger across the state on Friday. The gruesome incident took place in Bordua where the miscreants in Dhaniabheti gaon gangraped the minor girl inside her home in the absence of her parents and later set her on fire by pouring kerosene and fled. Later local residents came to her rescue and rushed her to the hospital where she was declared brought dead. Dacoit hurt in police firing, dead

RAHA:An infamous robber died in Nagaon hours after he sustained injury as he was trying to escape police during an operation on Friday. Two of his associates were captured.The incident took place in the wee hours at Mohghuli area where a gang of dacoits was trying to strike forcing the police to step in. Police captured two of them while others fled and one of them was shot at as police opened fire at him for trying to escape in the wee hours.Identified as Ramjan Ali, he was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries in the morning. RAHA , March 13 :  The 12 hr Assam Bandh called by Tribal organisations of Assam  from 5 am today in protest against the government's failure to fill up vacant posts reserved for Scheduled Tribes ended  in the evening heavily affecting the normal life in Raha. The vehicles both private and public plying on NH 37 were run by police under tight security arrangements.
