CM gives away Anundoram award

The Assam government starts distributing the Anundoram Barooah Award to the first and high second division holder HSLC examinees from Tuesday. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi gave away the award to the recipients at a function in Khanapara in the morning.

In his address, Gogoi advised the students to take a vital lead to dress the society afresh with innovative mind and idea which, he hoped, would pay dividend in near future.

Education minister Pradyut Bordoloi, parliamentary secretary for education Rekibudin Ahmed were prominent among those who attended the function.

Comprising a certificate and a laptop, the award would be given away to altogether 40,800 first and high second division holder HSLC examinees in 2014 across the state.

GUWAHATI: The probe into the APSC scam is set to take a new twist after the Dibrugarh police investigating it seized around 300 answer scripts of civil service answersctipts from Guwahati on Wednesday. Led by SS Panesar, who is heading the probe, a team of policemen raided Sri Hari Apartment in Bhangagarh area where the answer scripts were seized. At least 42 ACS, APS and allied service officers apart from Chairman Rakesh Paul, one of his members have been jailed in this huge scam. A few more arrest are likely in a couple of days.
GUWAHATI: In yet another major setback for Assam BJP unit, the enforcement directorate  has chargesheeted a senior party leader in a bank fraud case. He is none other than Jitu Goswami whom the saffron party fielded in Samoguri constituency in the last assembly to take on Congress candidate Rockybul Hussain. Goswami along with three others allegedly embazzled ₹3 crore from the Indian Oversees Bank a couple of years back which ED was probing. GUWAHATI: Senior police officer Kuladhar Saikia will take over as director general of police on Monday. The special director general Saikia will take charge from Mukesh Sahay who is going on retirement on that day. Saikia, the 1985 batch IPS officer is also an award winning Assamese litterateur who received the coveted Sahitya Akademy Award.
Guwahati: The media fraternity will remember journalist Simanta Bhagawati, who passed away on 21 April in a city hospital following a massive stroke, in a meeting to be held at Guwahati Press Club on Friday next. It may be noted that Simanta, 53, was also a sportsman and faced the stroke on 19 April while playing tennis at a city court. He was associated with The Assam Tribune till May last year. A man of humour, Simanta leaves behind his wife and a daughter with other relatives and well-wishers. Journalist Forum Assam (JFA) appeals everyone in the media family to join in the memorial meeting starting at 3 pm of 27 April 2018.
