Normal life in the upper Assam districts comes to a grinding halt on Saturday following the All Adivasi Students' Association (AASA)-sponsored state-wide bandh in protest against the border violence in Goalghat district where Nagamiscreantskilled at least 11 local residents in UriamGhat this week.
Vehicles are off from the roads in Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. Shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed due to the 12 hour bandh call by AASA on Saturday.
Life in the violence-hit Uriamghat areas continues to remain crippled fearing more backlash by the Naga people. Securityforces are fanning in the entire area. But more and more panic stricken people are leaving homes.
Several political leaders visited the relief camps to expressed graveconcern over the incident where at least 11 people were killed.

The Assam Government on Friday approached the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe into the huge seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes in Guwahati from three accused persons on August 30 last year.According to government sources, the three accused who were on their way from Malda in West Bengal through Guwahati in a Chevrolet Tavera were rounded up by officials from DRI, Guwahati at Beltola Chariali. Fake Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 11.99 lakh were found in their possession. Dispur police intensifies crackdown against the thieves who have been striking in the city a day after the seizure of a huge quantity of gold, silver and diamond ornament from a person.Marathon interrogation continues on Ajit Karmakar from whose possession these ornaments were found on Thursday.Notably, acting on the confessional statement of a thief, police conducted a raid at a room in Fatasheel Ambari area where a person Ajit Karma housed. The Assam government has recommended CBI probe into the rhino poaching incidents that repeatedly rocks Kaziranga National Park. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that the state government had already written to CBI for probe into the recent rhino poaching incidents in KNP. He said that it might be a big political conspiracy into the big horn animal killings, where militants are also involved. The move came 24 hours after poachers killed ome more rhino in the word heritage site. Assam had lost at least 42 rhinos in 2012, where poachers killed 21 rhinos in KNP. In this year, poachers killed seven rhinos in Kaziranga.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that the Assam State Police Accountability Commission would be set up in several areas to ensure better public participation in accountability and transparency at various levels of police hierarchy.Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati that the panel now based in Guwahati will have a forum each in upper Assam, north bank of river Brahmaputra and Barak Valley in south Assam for the convenience of people. He said that the forums will be headed by a judge, he said, publicity will be given on the accountability initiative for public information and participation.
