Jongal Balahu statue

The Tiwa Autonomous Council has decided to install a statue of the great Tiwa king, brave warrior Jongal Balahu, the son of king Arimatta at Jongal Balahu Garh near Raha. The decision to this effect was revealed in a public meet held at Jongal Balahu Garh recently. The statue which will be installed inside the Jongal Balahu Garh premises has been conceived and designed by noted sculptor of the state Biren Singh. 

King Arimatta and his son Jongal Balahu is shrouded in mystery and many legends cluster round them. Arimatta , a local adventurer, subdued the Bar Bhuyans and then occupied Kamata in 1365-85 A.D. Arimatta's name is also associated in a Nishi legend related to the Hita fort in present Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. Arimatta may have had his seat of power at Vaidyagarh near present Rangia , the ruins of which is still extant. It is said that the high embankments known as Jongal Garh in the area are remains of an old fort of Jongal Balahu. The site is said to have been the capital of Jongal Balahu who ruled over the region after his father Arimatta’s death. Later Jongal Balahu was defeated in a battle by the Kacharis and drowned himself in the Kalong river.

One held for extortion bid

Acting on a tip off , Raha police on Tuesday arrested one person for trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from one Kanak Nath of Sariohtoli village under Raha revenue circle. According to police, the arrested Pranjal Deka had nexus with Tiwa insurgency group Tiwa Liberation Army ( TLA ) and came to Raha on an extortion drive at the instance of their leader Bidyut Amseng.

Narrow escape for Cong leader

Former  Congress  minister and MLA of  Batadrava constituency  Goutam Bora’s  Inova vehicle ( AS01 AK-1597 ) met with an accident on Sunday  noon at Dighaliati area at Raha. Fortunately, no one suffered injuries in the vehicle which met with an accident. According to police,  the minister’s car lost control all of a sudden in an effort to save a cow on the highway  and hit  another vehicle. Woman murdered in Raha

A 29-year-old married woman was murdered at her residence at Uttar Petboha village under Raha P.S on Thursday night. Sharp weapon injury marks were found on the neck, breast, and stomach  of the victim,Paree Saikia. When the neighbours reached the spot, the victim was lying on the bed and she had deep slits on her throat. During the investigation by police, it was discovered that nothing was looted from the house, which led them to suspect a personal dispute as the reason. The husband of the woman was not at home when the murder took place, neighbours said. AASU leader passes away

Tapan Das , Headmaster , Nelipar Primary School and a former leader of Raha unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)  who actively participated in Assam agitation passed away at his house at Chaparmukh following prolonged illness on Tuesday. He was 54. A popular personality of the area, he was loved and respected by all sections of people for his amiable disposition. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. A pall of gloom descended at Raha and Chaparmukh as soon as the news of his demise spread. Different organisations, including Raha AASU unit have mourned Das’s demise.  

Training on soil held at Nagaon

A two days officers training programme on ‘Soil Health Card’ was organized recently at the Regional Agricultural Research Centre ( RARS ) Shillongoni, Nagaon. The training programme was sponsored by State Department of Agriculture Govt. of Assam. Body found on train at Chaparmukh

The body of a man was found on a train that arrived at Chaparmukh junction from Tinisukia on Sunday, police said. The body, found under mysterious condition, was identified as Kiranjyoti Hazarika of Philobari, Tinisukia district. According to Chaparmukh railway police, the deceased was on his way to Guwahati from Tinisulia by the Brahmaputra mail. The cause of the death is yet not confirmed.

Paralyzing bandh in Raha

Normal life remains heavily paralyzed in Raha following a 12 hour bandh by the various local organizations who are dead opposed to the proposed AIIMS in North Guwahati instead of central Assam. Roads in Raha are wearing a deserted look with vehicles refusing to ply under the impact of the bandh. Road blockade for AIIMS

The Nagaon-Guwahati Highway  remained closed as the Middle Assam AIIMS Demand Committee blocked the NH 37 at Raha Chariali for one and half hours on Thursday. More than 600 people including AASU, ATSU , AJYCP, KMSS, Raha unit members and Womens’ organizations blocked the highway standing on the middle of the road shouting slogans against Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma ,  and the state and central government. An escalating tension grips Raha when the authorities deployed heavy security forces on Wednesday a day before the road blockade demanding the proposed AIIMS in this central Assam place instead of Changsari in the outskirt of Guwahati. Continuing its tirade against the setting up of AIIMS hospital at Changsari, Middle Asom AIIMS Demand Committee ( MAADC ) on Sunday  announced a series of agitation against the  state government and state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma.
