Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

An alleged move to impeach Pranab Gogoi as Speaker created no less flutter among the Congress legislators in the first day of the Assam assembly’s budget session on Monday. But the Assam government made it plain and simple that it has no idea of how two ruling party legislators have been seeking legal opinion to remove Gogoi. Police falls short of strength

 The break down in law and order, if any, can be attributed to the shortage of police strength. The Assam government on Monday informed the House that nearly 20 per cent posts of the 75,559-strong Assam Police have been lying vacant at present. Replying to a query by AGP MLA Keshab Mahanta during Question Hour in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday, state Environment and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain said 14,356 posts were vacant out of the 75,559 sanctioned posts in the police department. Kidnapped schoolboy killed

 In a bizarre incident that sends shickwaves across the state, a few miscreants killed a school boy for not getting ransome from his parents. The gruesome incident took place in Mongoldoi where Class VI student Nipon Nath was kidnapped a couple of days . The abductors sent message to his parents demanding Rs 10 lakh. But they killed Nipon and dumped the body in Sipajhar to be recovered on Monday morning. Police investgation is going on. But nobody has so far been arrested in this connection.     

Deka leads BJP in assembly

 BJP has appointed Jadav Chandra Deka as the new leader of the party in the Assam Assembly. party leadership has reorganised the legislative team to strengthen the operations within the Assembly. Budget session begins

The Assam assembly begins its budget session on Monday with a stormy note with the Opposition taking on the government alleging failure on all fronts. As the House met at 9 in the morning with question hours, the Opposition parties started launching scathing attack on the government citing the issues one by one. No cultivable plot for industry: Govt

The Assam government on Saturday made it plain and simple that under no circumstances it will acquire agricultural land for industrial purpose. But in the same breath, it clarified plans to reclassify the unused land, where farming never took place. The government cleared its position after it talked to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leadership in Dispur. Talking to Assam Times, the government officials denied any intention to give agricultural land to industrialists. They said that the intention was only to correct this and wants to reclassify those lands as "non-agricultural" so that "some developmental works" can be carried out in future.

AGP stage dharna in Dispur

The Asom Gana Parishad leaders stage dharna in front of the Assam Assembly on Monday in protest against the retain the Bangladeshi vote bank by Congress government in Assam and the BJP-led government at the Centre.  AGP legislators also join the dharna along with other leaders demanding immediate halt in the move for asylum to the Bangladeshi immigrants who came to Assam after 1972.
