Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Army jawan held for molest attempt

 Police arrested an Army jawan for allegedly trying to molest a teenaged girl inside the Dibrugarh-Delhi Rajdhani Express on Tuesday. The incident took place in between Lumding and Chaparmukh stations where the 17-year old who was girl travelling with her uncle in a three-tier AC compartment raised an alarm at 4 AM after the army jawan man was making the alleged attempt. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) immediately caught the accused sent him to the Railway Police in Guwahati Railway Station. Flood waters show receding trend

There is some let-up in the flood fury. But the misery refuses to recede. Flood waters seem to have started stopped spreading to new areas in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district. The water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are showing a   receding trend following the halt in the incessant rains during the last 12 hours. But the mighty river is still flowing above the danger mark in Dhubri and Goalpara. Other rivers like Puthimari and Beki are also showing signs of rising. Initial respite for Kaziranga

The flood fury in the Kaziranga National Park seems to have showing a receding trend on Tuesday. Twenty percent of the entire national park is now free for the animals to stay.The animals and birds to have shifted to the Karbi hills at the height of the fury are expected to be return.But many areas of the park are still inaccessible despite a drop in the water level. Park authorities told Assam Times that that proper extent of damages would be assessed later. 

BSF-BGB talks on Wednesday

 North east insurgent outfits camping on the soil of Bangladesh are likely to figure in the BSF-BGB talks in New Delhi slated in Wednesday. New Delhi is all set to mount pressure on Dhaka to flush out insurgents hiding in its territory. The BSF director general is further expected to seek his Bangladeshi counterpart’s help to the check cross-border crimes. A delegation of the Border Guards Bangladesh is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday for the bi-annual talks with their Indian counterparts. Steps to ensure peace along the Indo-Bangla border is also expected to be discussed in the meeting be held at the BSF headquarters in the national capital.

Sri Krishna Janmastami underway

 Janmastami is being celebrated with much traditional religious fervor across the state to mark the birth day of the Lord Krishna on Monday. Well decorated temples and namghars are teeming with devotees from Sunday night. A series of cultural functions are also lined up on the occasion. The focal point of attraction is the ISKCON temple at Ulubari in Guwahati where people have been thronging in thousands to attend the celebration. The temple will hold the celebration for the next three days. The Assam Times family also celebrated the Sri Krishna Janmastami at its headquartered in Guwahati on Monday morning.    

Withdraw miscreants: ULFA(I) to Naga govt

The anti-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom has appealed to the Nagaland leadership to rein in the trouble mongers in Uriamghat in Golaghat district. Army intensifies relief and rescue

 The flood-hit areas in Nagaon district are getting army help to get rid of the ravaging flood waves.      The district administration sought Army to help rescue 145 marooned people at Kalapani village in Koliabor circle in the district where unprecedented rain resulted in inundation over a large area. Troops from Gajraj Corps were requisitioned around 8pm on August 16 and the Army immediately deployed a flood relief column under Lt Col Pinaki Chakraborthy from Misa Army Camp at night. The Army has so far evacuated 145 civilians — including 30 men, 55 women and 60 children — to a relief camp and provided first-aid and relief material.    

Flood situation deteriorates; toll 3

 Assam continues to grapple with a grim flood situation where the toll has gone up to 3. The third victim is a 25-year youth at Nauboicha in Lakhimpur. The worst affected districts in the second wave of flood are Lakhimpur and Dhemaji where the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger mark. In Lakhimpur and Dhemahji districts, over 2 lakh people have been rendered homeless and the surging flood waters have damaged over 15,000 hectares of crop lands. In Dhemaji, 76,894 people of 222 villages under Dhemaji, Sisiborgaon and Jonai revenue circles were affected by the floods till Monday.    

Gogoi on stock taking visit to Golaghat

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is on a stock taking visit to Uriam Ghat area today a week after Naga miscreants killed at least 14 people. Apart from reviewing the situation with top ranked police and civil officials, the chief minister is visiting the relief camps. On the other hand, the Assam government claimed to have restored peace and normalcy in the troubled torn areas bordering Nagaland. The authorities have urged the panic stricken people to go back to their homes.   

2 more bodies found in Uriam Ghat

 Tension refuses to die down in Golaghat district along the Assam-Nagaland border. Two more bodies were recovered on Sunday who were believed to have been killed by the Naga miscreants. Local residents in Uriam Ghat area with the help of security forces recovered the bodies from Chainpur village where the miscreants unleashed a reign of terror on August 12. The authorities have confirmed the number of injured from 3 to 7 in the attack. The night curfew from 6 pm to 6 am in the area along the inter-state border will continue in order to avoid any untoward development. /
