Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

An uneasy situation is prevailing in Bongaigaon following the shoot out where an ABMSU leader sustained serious injury on Saturday. Once again a molestation attempt has forced the state and its people to hang head in shame. This time the epicenter is Tinsukia district where an Adivasi girl had to jumped from a moving bus to get rid of a molestation attempt on Friday. According to information, two girls jumped from the bus when of their co passengers made a desperate attempt to molest them on a moving bus in the evening. The hapless girls had no option but to save themselves from the molester passenger. One of the two girls sustained serious injury and died on the way to the hospital. Details awaited.
Durga puja is over. Puja pandels have fallen silent. The idols of the goddess of strength, mostly, have been immersed in rivers and water bodies across the state on Friday evening after the Mahanavami and Dasami on the same day. But a section of the puja organizers are set to immerse the idols only on Saturday morning. Guwahati also falls silent after soaking in the festivities for a week. The idols were immersed on the river Brahmaputra while city district administration has asked the remaining organizers to complete the immersion of the idols by Saturday noon.
Sankardev birth anniversary is being organized with cultural procession, seminar of the saint and staging of bhaonas across the state from Friday. The disciples of the saint Sankardeva in Guwahati also took out clourful cultural procession on Friday and Saturday on the occasion. Flood waters continue its receding trend. But the affected people have yet to get out of the blues. The toll has gone up to 44 with the recovery of yet another body in Morigaon on Thursday. With this, the toll in Goalpara alone stands at 20 while 16 persons lost their lives in Kamrup Rural. These are apart from 6 in Guwahati and one each in Morigaon and Dhubri. According to official information, 242 villages in four districts are still reeling under the flood waves. In Goalpara, nearly 3.7 lakh people are affected, followed by around 15,000 in Kamrup Rural district.
Assam remembers Mahatma Gandhi on his 145-th birth anniversary along with other parts of the country on Thursday. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi led the state and its people in paying tribute to the father of the nation. Gogoi laid floral wreath at his statue atop Gandhi Mandop in Guwahati in the morning. He further addressed a brief function on the occasion.

The Centre will help Assam tide over the flood fury. Rajnath Singh announced Rs 286 crore central share of disaster relief to the state after the Union home minister made an aerial survey on the worst-hit Goalpara and Kamrup (rural) districts on Wednesday.Singh promised more funds once a detailed assessment of the extent of damage was done. Singh announced it after he met chief minister Tarun Gogoi.Earlier, he made his day-long trip to the region during which he made aerial survey of flood-hit districts of Assam and adjoining Garo Hills region of Meghalaya. 
Union home minister Rajnath Singh said that the Centre was expecting a detailed memorandum from Dispur to ascertain the amount of central fund to tide over the flood fury.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati after touring the flood-hit Goalpara and Kamrup(rural), Singh said that an inter-ministerial team would assess the total extent of damage by the flood waves.Singh said, “I met both chief ministers Tarun Gogoi and Mukul Sangma and discussed the situation, and have asked them to send a detailed memorandum each.
