Udalguri Election Officer resigns over cash-for-job scam
UDALGURI: Udalguri Election Officer Karpun Patir has resigned from the post over cash-for-job scam. The scam came to light after the Dibrugarh police arrested one Naba Kanta Patir, an engineer, from Dibrugarh after they caught him red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a lady doctor promising a government job on October 27, 2016. Karpun Patir is the son of former Congress Minister Sumitra Patir.
Karpun submitted his resignation letter to the Udalguri Deputy Commissioner on August 19 citing mother's ill health.
It may be mentioned that Karpun’s name has figured in the infamous Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam. He has allegedly bribed suspended chairman of APSC, Rakesh Paul to secure a plum government job.
On the other hand, Sumitra Patir’s elder son, Jawahar Patir is a Sales Tax Inspector, younger son Minakshi Permey Patir is an ACS officer.
Their daughter-in-law Geetali Doley, who also served as an ACS officer at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district, was arrested by Dibrugarh Police for being involved in the cash-for-job scam. Jailed Geetali Doley has already been discharged by the State Government from her duty.

UDALGURI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports of the alleged incident of police atrocities on a doctor in Chirang district on Friday.
AHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Chirang to cause an inquiry into the incident where media reports stated that the Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang District not only assaulted Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC but also made him to kneel down along with two others for not wearing masks.

TANGLA: A devastating inferno gutted six houses in Pujakhola locality of Tangla town on Tuesday night at about 9 pm.
Though the source of the fire has not been ascertained ,fire broke out followed by explosion of six cylinders razing the properties worth lakhs to the ground within minutes.

UDALGURI: A baby hog deer weighing about six kilogram was rescued by Mithu Sarkar and Ankit Tanti, two activists of Green Valley Wild Life Protection Society, an NGO of Orongajuli tea estate area today at about 3.00 pm and handed over this to the Udalguri forest department in a healthy condition.
While talking to this correspondent, Mithu Sarksr informed that the NGO has been instrumental to rescue young ones of hog deers, wild elephants, tiger cubs in the near past too and till date, it has been able to rescue such animals which came to their notice.
