Assam celebrated Silpi Divas across the state to commemorate the death anniversary of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla on Friday. Cultural functions, Jyoti Sangeet competitions and seminars were organized in many places to mark the occasion. The central function at took place in Tezpur, the birthplace of the first Assamese film maker.

Dhaka tragedy keeps border on alert

The recent reign of terror in Dhaka has forced the north eastern states to remain on alert along the Indo-Bangladesh border. A round the clock vigil is in place along the border to check the intrusion of miscreants in the face of a crackdown on the soil of Bangladesh. A stepped up vigil has been intensified along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya. Armed miscreants, who unless no less terror might infiltrate from across the border to get rid of the crackdown following the recent happening in Dhaka where 20 civilians were killed by 7 militants 6 of whom were shot dead by the armed forces at the end of a high voltage drama of 12 hours inside a restaurant.

AJYCP stages strike, opposes auction move

Hundreds of AJYCP activists in Sivasagar district launched day long strike in protest against the move to auction 12 oil fields. The agitating activists thronged the oil fields where they warned the Narendra Modi government at the Centre not to proceed with the deal. On Tuesday, they would block the National Highway No 37 to oppose the move. On Wednesday, AJYCP will stage rail blockade asking the Centre to roll back the decision by July 8. Notably, the Centre is preparing to auction dozens of oil fields to the private parties which include 12 from Assam.

Ripun Bora interim PCC president

Senior Congress leader Ripun Bora has assumed charge as Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s interim president a couple of weeks after president Anjan Dutta died of illness in New Delhi.   Party high command in Delhi appointed Bora as interim president which is believed to be a chance for the Rajya Sabha MP to prove his organizational skill. “If the things within the poll-hit party start improving the high command is contemplating to confirm his appointment as PCC president. Before the move, the high command got positive feedback from former chief minister Tarun Gogoi who is said to be closed to the former minister,” AICC sources said.      

AJYCP strike on Monday

The move to auction 12 oil fields in Assam runs into a hail of state-wide protests. Announcing a slew of protest, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad threatens to intensify protest if the Centre refuses to restraint by July 8. Talking to Assam Times, AJYCP leaders in Sivasagar said they are holding a 12-hour strike at the oil field in Sivasagar district on Monday. On Tuesday, the influential organization will further block the national Highway No 37 in protest against the controversial move of the Modi Government. On July 8, they would block the rails opposing the move.

Lifeless Swu to be flown to home

The mortal remains of Isak Chishi Swu is set to be flown to Nagaland on Wednesday two days after the revolutionary died at a New Delhi based hospital. The lifeless NSCN-(IM) leader would be flown to Dimapur before lifting to his ancestral village for last rites. Oilfield auction: AGP opposes BJP proposes

Amid a state wide brouhaha on the move to auction 12 oil fields in Assam, both AGP and BJP have been taking contradictory positions on the sensitive issue. BJP leaders and ministers have strongly advocated the move saying that it would, in fact, help Assam claim the rights over its own resources. “We are bound to endorse the move. We can’t oppose it. This is our policy. These oil fields won’t help Assam do anything. We would in turn get money from these non profitable oilfield,” said a BJP leader.
