Assam celebrated Silpi Divas across the state to commemorate the death anniversary of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla on Friday. Cultural functions, Jyoti Sangeet competitions and seminars were organized in many places to mark the occasion. The central function at took place in Tezpur, the birthplace of the first Assamese film maker.

Presidential polling in progress

Assam also joins the nationwide presidential polls on Monday in search of a successor of Pranab Mukherjee who demits very soon.  The legislators have started coming one after another to the Assembly Secreteriat where polling took started at 8 in the morning to conclude at 3 in the afternoon. Career Awareness Programme

All Rabha Students Union (ARSU), Chayagaon Anchalik Committee has organised a day long career awareness programme for the locality of Chaygaon at Pantan High School on 14th July. This programme has been a part of the ongoing special summer coaching programme organised by ARSU at the same venue. Nagaland press reacts to suspicious media initiative

The Nagaland Press Association (NPA) expressed worries over the formation of a State chapter of Newspapers Association of India (NAI) and submission of a memorandum to the State Governor PB Acharya recently at Raj Bhawan without engaging the local journalists of Nagaland based newspapers. “The memorandum to Governor Acharya was forwarded by one Monojit Singha, introduced as the convener of NAI’s northeast zonal committee. He was accompanied by Thungchamo Humtsoe claiming to be the Nagaland State coordinator of the NAI,” said a statement issued by the NPA. AHRC issues notice on death in Police firing at Goalpara

Single bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission, comprising of Shri Naba Kamal Bora, took suo moto cognizance of a news item published in the vernacular dailies, “Amar Asom”, “Asomiya Pratidin” and English daily, “The Assam Tribune” all dated, 01 July, 2017 reporting about the death of a youth named Yakub Ali and injury to another, named Rejaul Karim in police firing. The Bench, in its order dated 04.07.2017 in AHRC case no. 2053/6/17-18 directed that notice be issued to the District Magistrate, Goalpara to cause an effective enquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of one protester and causing injury to another one. Paralyzing bandh

A 12 hour statewide Assam bandh hit normal life across the north eastern state on Monday. Called by six ethic groups reiterating the demand for scheduled tribe (ST) status the bandh was marked by a few stray incidents.Koch-Rajbongshi, Moran, Motok, Chutia, Tai Ahom and Adivasi tea garden workers communities have called the bandh alleging the government failure to keep the poll promises.Bandh supporters blocked many vital roads disrupting surface communication while some of them stopped the movement of traffic by burning tyres and prevented many shops and markets from opening during the 12 hours.

Workshop on Sanchipaat painting

Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva (SSS) has started a five day long workshop on 'Preparation of Sanchipaat manuscript and painting in Sankari style' at Batadrava Than from July 2 in association with Batadrava Than Management Committee. There will be practical lessons in preparation of Sanchipaat and use of Hengul-Haital to paint art on Sanchipaat. Mridu Moucham Bora, Secretary of SSS is the main resource person of this workshop.
