Single bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission, comprising of Shri Naba Kamal Bora, took suo moto cognizance of a news item published in the vernacular dailies, “Amar Asom”, “Asomiya Pratidin” and English daily, “The Assam Tribune” all dated, 01 July, 2017 reporting about the death of a youth named Yakub Ali and injury to another, named Rejaul Karim in police firing.
The Bench, in its order dated 04.07.2017 in AHRC case no. 2053/6/17-18 directed that notice be issued to the District Magistrate, Goalpara to cause an effective enquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of one protester and causing injury to another one.
The news item reported that Yakub Ali died from injuries received on his head from a stray bullet after police resorted to firing in air to disperse a group of protesters who staged a road blockade on National Highway 37 at Naranarayan Setu point at around 11.30am on 30th June, 2017.
The Commission also received a petition in this regard from Asom Chatra Yuva Sanmilan and an intimation from the Superintendent of Police, Goalpara.
The report is to be submitted within one month from the receipt of the notice.
