Meghalaya CM Dr. Mukul Sangma Wednesday mooted for promoting the state as a popular destination for Christmas and New Year celebration. Dr. Sangma told a gathering at the Winter Festival in Tura that the rich and diverse culture of Meghalaya should be harnessed for economic benefits.
Dr. Sangma remarked that the government is contemplating to declare December and January as a calendar month for promotion of the state as a destination for celebration of Christmas and New Year. Towards this end, the tourism department has been instructed to light up and beautify Shillong and Tura in the run up to the festive month.
Dr. Sangma detailed out that Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) has been asked to chalk out elaborate strategies for promoting Meghalaya as Christmas and New Year destination.
“Unique Christmas celebration of Garo Hills should be preserved and promoted for economic gains”, exhorted Dr. Sangma.
Seeking cooperation from the people Dr. Sangma opined that it has been an endeavor of his government to reach out to the people through sustained livelihood programme, encouraging activities related to Tourism.
“Meghalaya is abundantly blessed with rich culture, natural wealth and most importantly human resources. Government has made an attempt to showcase the different tribes of the state in promoting and marketing the state”, said Dr. Sangma.
Citing that festivals and events give an opportunity for showcasing the latent talents, Dr. Sangma suggested that their expertise be harnessed for the benefit of the people.
He also made an appeal to take advantage of the rich culture to promote Meghalaya as a vibrant state. Dr. Sangma further informed that Rs. 165 cr has been earmarked for construction of an international standard – Shillong International Centre for Performing Arts via-a-via highlighting that a similar centre is being also established in Tura, for which Deputy Commissioner has been entrusted with the responsibility for locating land.
