Dispur is prepared to operationalise 181 helpline exclusively for women in distress.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi writes to Chief Secretary PP Verma asking him to instruct the state Home and Political Department to work out an action plan to operationalise the 181 helpline facility for women as it was in other states like Delhi.

Gogoi directed that the helpline be operationalised in consultation with the Assam Police, Health and Family Welfare, Assam State Disaster Management Authority and other line departments. Woman joins ULFA!

Yet another woman is believed to have joined ULFA-I. According to information, the women who worked with the state handloom and textile department in Guwahati went missing from December.Identified as Bobby Bora from Tezpur, she went missing from a private hostel in Guwahati. Water logjam ends

The deadlock over water supply dies down. The agitating workers would resume duties from Tuesday morning. The decision was taken following the assurance of public health engineering minister Dr Ardhendu Dey.Public health engineering workers were on strike from 5 in the morning alleging the failure of the government to redress their grievances.

ULFA session in Goalpara

ULFA’s pro talk faction is gearing up for the general council meeting on Tuesday.The outfit will hold its session in Goalpara to discuss several unresolved issues. Top leaders of the outfit met in Guwahati on Monday where the agenda of the session got its final shape.Progress of peace process with the Centre and deportation of founder general secretary Anup Chetia are expected to be prominently figured in the meeting.Apart from chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, vice chairman Pradeep Gogoi, cultural secretary Pranati Phukan, finance secretary Chitraban Hazarika, foreign secretary Sashadhar Chaudhury attended the meeting.

Huge tortoise rescued

A full grown tortoise pulled huge crowd after it was rescued in Guwahati on Monday.Local residents in Hengrabari rescued the animal weighing around 40 kg from a pit in the morning. They informed it to the forest department through police.Later the forest officials took it to the Assam State Zoo. The local residents are looking for another tortoise which is believed to have been hiding in the pit.

Guwahati taps still dry

The deadlock over water supply refuses to die down even 12 hours after the entire Guwahati city plunged into a dearth of potable water. The situation is expected to improve only after the next 72 hours.Public health engineering workers are on strike from 5 in the morning alleging the failure of the government to redress their grievances.The workers on strike have not allowed the hired men to run the water pumps at the Pandu Ghat. They raised their 14 point demands last week threatening strike from Monday. But of no avail forcing them to resort to strike for the next 72 hours.

Hectic confabulations grip the Opposition camp to field a consensus candidate for the Rajya Sabh polls slated for February 7.A close door meet between AGP and AIUDF decided to field veteran journalist Haidor Hussain as the consensus candidate. But still there is hardly any chance for the opposition party. BJP made it clear that they have ideological differences with AIUDF.AGP and AIUDF have jointly urged BJP to reconsider the decision and to help the consensus candidate win.
