181 helpline for women

Dispur is prepared to operationalise 181 helpline exclusively for women in distress.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi writes to Chief Secretary PP Verma asking him to instruct the state Home and Political Department to work out an action plan to operationalise the 181 helpline facility for women as it was in other states like Delhi.

Gogoi directed that the helpline be operationalised in consultation with the Assam Police, Health and Family Welfare, Assam State Disaster Management Authority and other line departments. Tension in Kokrajhar

Tension seems to have been escalating in Kokrajhar on Sunday following the recovery of a girl’s body a day after she went missing.Local residents spotted the body at a paddy field at Binachora on Sunday morning and reported it to the police. The girl was believed to have been repeatedly raped and murdered on Saturday. Investigation is in progress.

Encephalitis vaccination from Feb

Governor JB Patnaik on Sunday said that process days are not far for the Guwahatians to get metro rail.In his Republic Day speech after unfurling the tricolor at the Veterinary Playground in Khanapara, Patnaik said that his government has invited tenders to begin the project.A few months back, the government announced three metro rail projects from Khanapara to Jalukbari, Paltanbazar to Khanapara and Panbazar to Narengi.

JFA observes R-Day

Despite general strike and boycott call by 11 north eastern militant outfits, the Journalists’ Forum Assam celebrated the 65th Republic Day on Sunday.The journalists body observed the red letter day with flag hoisting at the Guwahati Press Club in the morning. JFA’s Republic Day celebration is a strong message for the militant outfits that the people should be allowed to celebrate both R-Day to pay homage to the martyrs.Notably, a dozen of militant outfits operating in the north east imposed a general strike in the entire region on Sunday. 

Golden voice echoes in Delhi

The golden voice of Assam mesmerized lakhs of people in New Delhi when Assam displayed its tableaux at the Republic Day function on Sunday.As soon as the tableaux was displayed with Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s Bristirna Parore Okahankhya Janatar….lakhs of people listened to the epoch making song and responded with a big hand. President Pranab Mukherjee raised his hands along with Vice President Dr Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who represents the state in the Rajya Sabha. The tableaux was full of Dr Hazarika’s statue apart from his books apart from the symbol of the Brahmaputra.    

Police commissioner for Guwahati

After years of will-it-won’t-it, the Assam government is all set to appoint police commissioner for Guwahati.The announcement echoes from Governor JB Patnaik’s speech after unfurling the national flag at the Veterinary Playground in Khanapara.Patnaik said that the commissionerate would be set up soon to firmly deal with the rising crime graph in the city.The government assured the Guwahatians of the police commissionerate in the wake of the 2007 serial blast. But the process got delayed.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi a few months back said that the police commissioner would be appointed after the Republic Day.

Patnaik’s clarion call

Governor JB Patnaik urged the militant groups to join the national mainstream to help the state develop.Unfurling the tricolor at the Veterinary Playground in Khanapara on Sunday morning, the governor said that the peace initiatives by a section of militants and the government have started paying dividends. He urged the remaining militants to come forward for talks.

Tribute to martyrs

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi paid glorious tribute to the martyrs at the Shradhanjali Kanon on the occasion of the Republic Day on Sunday.Gogoi arrived in the park at 8 in the morning and laid floral wreath in the memory of the martyrs at a brief function attended by senior officials. Then he left for Khanapara to attend the central function.
