Three villagers died and twenty others have been injured when security forces sprang upon a group of people who prevented the PowerGrid authority from erecting a wall in Biswanath chariali on Tuesday. The incident took place at Baghmari at 5.30 in the morning when local people came out to the street opposing the wall erected secretly on Monday. Security forces opened fire at the protesters where one died on the spot and two others died on the way to the hospital. Angry mob later burnt down 4 police vehicles. Top ranked police and civil officials have arrived in the spot to contain the situation.

According to the villagers of Harangajao in Dima Hasao District, Assam, the Company (JKM Infra Ltd.) responsible for construction of the East-West Highway corridor stretch at Harangajao village have callously jeopardised the natural irrigation of the adjacent paddy fields by blocking the natural streams(which remain small during winter, but widen many more times during the rainy season, which the construction company could not anticipate) and diverting the water flow, thereby not only depriving water to the paddy fields, but also creating an impending situation of flood in the villages.In the coming monsoon season, the torrential rainfall would be diverted to the villages flooding the village lands, since the highway construction company has already blocked many small natural streams, which used to naturally minimise the heavy flow of water during heavy rainfall.The Dima Hasao district authorities (the Council and the Deputy Commissioner’s Office) must wake up to the impending ecological disaster and force the Construction company to review their ongoing construction planning & execution, which is currently jeopardising the local terrain due to blockage of natural streams.Only this can avert the impending flood and normalise the natural flow of water in the area.Once damage is done to the ecology, it is irreplaceable and economy of the area is destroyed!JKM Infra Ltd. is playing with the lives and livelihood of poor people in Harangajao…even the roads built by them are unlikely to remain intact, due to lack of proper soling (that is firming the foundation layer of the roads)!
The Centre on Thursday said that ULFA 'general secretary' Anup Chetia would soon be brought back from Bangladesh. According to sources available with the government, a group of dreaded Ulfa militants has sneaked into the city with a plan to strike with a car bomb. Two poachers were killed and three others have been injured at an encounter in Kaziranga on Wednesday. The encounter took place in the Agaratali range in the wee hours. A gang of poachers started indiscriminate firing as they faced the forest guards patrolling on the spot. When the forest guards retaliated with firing, two poachers were killed on the spot. The Assam government on Tuesday increased rate of wages, holidays, hours of work and conditions of skilled and unskilled workmen employed by contractors.As per the revision the rate of wages of an unskilled workmen with ITI Certificate will be Rs 277 per day, skilled workmen other than ITI Certificate holder will be paid Rs 175 and unskilled workmen Rs 169 per day.The rate of wages has been fixed in such a manner that no skilled workman gets less than the stipulated amount for working for a maximum 8 hours a day and no unskilled workmen gets less than Rs 169 per day.In case of overtime work, the wages will be twice the ordinary rate of wages for every work in excess of 8 hours a day and 48...
Dispur is all set to ban tobacco. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the health department to table a bill in the assembly banning all kinds of tobacco products including smokeless tobacco. A legislation would be tabled in the assembly soon.Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Saram said that the government felt it necessary to ban all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products.The instruction assumes significance as oral cancer is on the rise in the state and is caused mainly due to consumption of tobacco products.
The Assam assembly began its budget session on a stormy note on Monday. Governor Janki Ballav Patnaik opened the month long session with his customary speech. Two poachers who are suspected to be involved in the recent rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park, have been arrested during a joint operation by police and forest department in Sonitpur district on Sunday.Police and forest department officials, nabbed the duo from North Bank of Brahmaputra at Bishwanath Ghat.They have been identified as Aamir Islam and Moina Das and were suspected to be involved in the recent killing of rhinos and removal of horns in the park.
