Three villagers died and twenty others have been injured when security forces sprang upon a group of people who prevented the PowerGrid authority from erecting a wall in Biswanath chariali on Tuesday. The incident took place at Baghmari at 5.30 in the morning when local people came out to the street opposing the wall erected secretly on Monday. Security forces opened fire at the protesters where one died on the spot and two others died on the way to the hospital. Angry mob later burnt down 4 police vehicles. Top ranked police and civil officials have arrived in the spot to contain the situation.

According to the villagers of Harangajao in Dima Hasao District, Assam, the Company (JKM Infra Ltd.) responsible for construction of the East-West Highway corridor stretch at Harangajao village have callously jeopardised the natural irrigation of the adjacent paddy fields by blocking the natural streams(which remain small during winter, but widen many more times during the rainy season, which the construction company could not anticipate) and diverting the water flow, thereby not only depriving water to the paddy fields, but also creating an impending situation of flood in the villages.In the coming monsoon season, the torrential rainfall would be diverted to the villages flooding the village lands, since the highway construction company has already blocked many small natural streams, which used to naturally minimise the heavy flow of water during heavy rainfall.The Dima Hasao district authorities (the Council and the Deputy Commissioner’s Office) must wake up to the impending ecological disaster and force the Construction company to review their ongoing construction planning & execution, which is currently jeopardising the local terrain due to blockage of natural streams.Only this can avert the impending flood and normalise the natural flow of water in the area.Once damage is done to the ecology, it is irreplaceable and economy of the area is destroyed!JKM Infra Ltd. is playing with the lives and livelihood of poor people in Harangajao…even the roads built by them are unlikely to remain intact, due to lack of proper soling (that is firming the foundation layer of the roads)!
The country wide shutdown cripples normal life in Assam for the second day on Thursday.The peaceful bandh has partial response in interior areas of the state. Public transport remains completely off the road and many private offices and banks remaining closed. Train movement, however, remains untouched.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Centre to ensure that any dam related activities by China in Tibet do not cause ecological problems in the state.Gogoi said in Guwahati on Sunday that if the problems could be addressed, then communities residing in the catchment areas of the river would benefit.According to Gogoi, the state government is committed to holding elections to the Mising Autonomous Council and said the Council has been established for the welfare of Mising community.
y at Bishwanath Ghat last night, turned turtle near Panibharal area of Bishwanath Chariali town in the morning, killing four on the spot.Among the 26 injured, 16 were admitted to Bishwanath Chariali Civil Hospital but 13 of them were referred to Tezpur Kanaklata Civil Hospital after their condition became critical.The dead have been identified as 45-year Durga Chetry, 20-year old Krishna Chetry, 18-year old Gopal Chetry and 12-year-old Pinky Sarma. The vehicle, which was overloaded and speeding, turned turtle four times before rolling down the side of the road.

Over 500 people have been undergoing critical treatment at different hospitals in Guwahati after consuming food served as Prasad on Friday’s Saraswati Puja in Dimoria area of Kamrup. Over 50 people have fallen ill in Kamrup district of Assam after consuming Prasad on Friday. The patients, mostly, students and their guardians in the outskirt of Guwahati city have been rushed to the hospital as they complained of stomach ailment after consuming Prasad at a Saraswati puja function in Sonapur. Over 20 seriously ailing people have been rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.
An independent panchayat candidate allegedly committed suicide on Friday after losing an election in Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district. Mintu Das contested from 114 Ganmou village panchayat in Sualkuchi and lost the elections, the results for which were announced on Friday night. A depressed Das later hanged himself in his house.
Unidentified miscreants kidnapped an engineer of Power Grid Corporation from Baksa district on Saturday even as security forces are on rescue operation. The engineer, Santhala Taidy Raju, was abducted by a group of four armed men from the Power Grid Corporation's camp at Dhekipota under Goreshwar police station near the Indo-Bhutan border.Raju, who hails from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, was staying in the remote camp with some other company workers. He was forced at gunpoint to go along with the gunmen, who had come in two motorcycles and reportedly taken towards the Bhutan border.
In yet another blow for anti-talk ULFA, four hardcore militants, including a senior leader before police in Tinsukia district.Among the militants who laid down their arms is senior ULFA leader Rahendra Moran alias Guli Asom, who was responsible for the outfit's extortion related activities in the upper Assam districts. He was involved in a number of incidents of extortion from various businessmen and political leaders.The others who surrendered are Parikshit Moran, Champak Hazarika and Kushal Buragohain.
