Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Another tripartite talks for peace

Upper House coming up

Decks are clear for Upper House. The strength of the council of ministers is also set to be increased soon. An emergency cabinet meeting held at the residence of prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh appoved the proposal for the Upper House which has been pending for the last couple of months.

Steps to curb violence

A brain storming meet  of police heads from 14 districts chalked out a slew of strategies to counter the growing militant activities in these districts.  Presiding over the meeting at Assam police Headquarters on Thursday, DGP JN Chaudhury asked the SPs and IGs and DIGs to sternly deal with the fanning militant forces in the state.       The state of late, has witnessed an orgy of militanta activities in the form of murder, abduction and extortion forcing the centre to keep Dispur on alert.

Gogoi gets tougher

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said the the government wont tolerate any crime against women. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Wednesday, Gogoi said that a special task force would deal with the case. According to the chief minister, post mortem report suggests no rape. He hoped the truth would come to light soon.

Escalating protest in Lakhimpur

Five days have passed since a woman was brutally attacked and dumped on the roadside in Lakhimpur who succumbed injuries at the GMCH. But police have yet to arrest the perpetrators which runs into a hail of protest accross the state.        Thousands of people have been staging dharna in Lakhimpur demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.            The protestors made it clear that they would remain calm only after the examplary punishment of the perpetrators.    The incident took place in Boginadi when the mother of 8 year old child was brutally attacked after she got into a tempo on her way to take her child back from school...

Bongaigaon blast injured dead

The minor boy critically injured in the Bongaigaon blast died in Guwahati on Wednesday.      The three year old boy died three days after he was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.          The minor boy was critically wounded in Bongaigaon on Sunday as he was on the way to attend the Raas festival in the evening along with his parents.           Suspected NDFB-B exploded the powerful grenade in the town leaving 10 injured.

Shocking witch hunt in Nagaon

Three more people of a family were killed in the name of witch hunt. The incident took place at Rangalibasti area five days ago. The bodies of the Karbi family were recovered on Tuesday night four days after they went missing. The incident came to light after one of the family members found them traceless. He approached police alleging that on several earlier occassions a section of the villagers inflicted inhuman torture suspecting witch craft. Police arrested three persons in this connection and acting on their confessional statement police dug up the bodies from a jungle.

Sensational dacoity in Golaghat

Despite stepped up security measures, Golaghat town has turned into a den of criminals. In a sensational incident, a gang of dacoits looted the Digambor Jain temple after killing the securityman on Tuesday. The incident took place on Wednesday wee hours when the dacoits attacked Parasuram Goala as he was trying to them from entering into the temple at Chandan Nagar. Goala died on the spot before the dacoits looted the temple. Golaghat police have detained 3 persons in this connection.

Fierce gunfight in Kokrajhar

Two dreaded NDFB-S militants are believed to have been killed at a fierce gunbattle in Kokrajhar on Tuesday.           The encounter took place in the evening during a joint offensive against the militants---mongering trouble in BTAD areas in the form of killing, extortion and kidnapping.
