Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

PM reviews NE projects

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said his Government viewed infrastructure development in the North East as a key element in the strategy for developing the region and increasing connectivity with the rest of the country. Opening the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday, Dr Singh directed the Planning Commission to constitute a Monitoring Committee with representatives from the region to improve coordination among ministries. Sangbijit, 10 others most wanted

IK Sangbijitt, Ranjit Basumatary along with nine other anti-talk NDFB militants are now most wanted.The declaration came from the Assam police on Monday. Addressing a press conference in the headquarters, top ranked officials sought help of the people to capture them. A huge amount of Rs 10 lakh have been announced as reward if any provides police with any input on their whereabouts. The identity of the informer would be kept secret.

Massive operation in BTAD

An all clear like operation awaits BTAD areas against NDFB-S after the Bodo militant outfit killed 8 people in four different attacks within a period of 24 hours.According to information available with assamtimes, additional para military forces are expected to arrive in the troubled torn areas to deal with the situation.    DGP Khagen Sarma is also scheduled to leave for Kokrajhar to assess the situation. Meanwhile, security forces are spreading tentacles against the trouble mongers.

AASU meets Sahitya Sabha

AASU and Asom Sahitya Sabha have vowed to jointly fight for restoration of Assamese as the official language in the state.The resolution got its final shape when the student leaders held a crucial meeting in Guwahati with the state’s largest literary organization on Monday.Assam Accord also figured in the meeting where Sahitya Sabha, further, assured the AASU leadership of help to intensify the agitation for speedy implementation of the historic Accord.

Throw out Cong: Ramdev

Violence mars bandh

Violence seems to have marred the 24 hour bandh called by several organizations in protest against the recent Ramphalbeel incident.Bandh supporters in Rangiya set on fire a Maruti 800 carrying school goers on Monday morning. The driver was beaten up by the supporters. Local residents rescued the school children from the vehicle. 

14 held for shoot out

Police have picked up altogether 14 people in connection with the Ramphalbeel shoot out where 5 people were killed and two others injured on Saturday night.According to information, these were captured from two different places in Kokrajhar district. Police interrogation is going on.NDFB-S militants shot dead five Hindi-speaking passengers of a Jonai bound bus in Ramphalbeel in Kokrajhar on Saturday forcing the security forces to launch a combing operation in the entire BTAD areas.

BPF rally for peace

Thousands of people hit the streets in BTAD areas on Monday in protest against the orgy of violence carried out by NDFB-S that killed 8 people within 24 hours. Led by Bodoland Peoples’ Front, the protesters asked the militants to stop attack on innocent people and to allow the peace prevail in BTAD areas. Transport minister Chandan Brahma also participated in the procession along with other BPF leaders.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is expected to seek more central assistance for the state when he will attend the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday. To be chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his official residence at 11 in the morning, Gogoi is likely to raise the plight of a number of infrascture projects in the state.Dr Singh is expected to review the major infrascture projects in the entire region. DoNER minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar, union finance minister P Chidambaram are also scheduled to attend the meeting.The prime minister has already asked the ministries to expedite the implementation of all the north east projects.
