Training on environment education for teachers
As part of its mission to create a pool of ‘Green Teachers’ in the State to give a thrust to conservation efforts, Aaranyak organised a day-long environment education orientation programme for school teachers from fringe areas of Manas Tiger Reserve (MTR) on 23 February, 2013 at Kachugaon Forest Inspection Bungalow (IB) under Kachugaon Forest Division of Kokrajhar District of Assam.
The programme was organized by in partnership with Green Forest Conservation Society and in collaboration with Forest Department, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) of Assam. It was sponsored by Taiwan Forestry Bureau. It happened to be first such training programme in fringe areas of MTR with the focus to sensitise teachers on conservation.
Mr Rajual Islari, Chairman of Green Forest Conservation Society delivered the welcome address at the beginning of the training programme saying that programme is aimed at developing the communication skills of teachers especially for creating awareness for conservation of nature among the school children as well as the community members.
Conducting the technical session as resource persons Mr Dhrubajyoti Kalita and Mrs Namita Brahma of Aaranyak elaborately discussed on joyful learning methods with special reference to the environment education. They have demonstrated various types of teaching learning materials (TLM) developed by using low-cost and locally available materials.
Mr Dhrubajyoti Kalita apprised on various state and national level resource centres like Vigyan Prasar, VIPNET, NEIST, ASTEC, RSC and encouraged the teachers to establish communication for making their institutions resourceful. As a part of this technical session, the teachers participated in group discussion and identified some of achievable activities for next one year in their respective schools. Various study materials were distributed among teachers.
Presenting pictorials facts about Manas Tiger Reserve, Dr Bibhuti P Lahkar, Programme Secretary of Aaranyak has highlighted on past and present scenario of this world famous natural treasure trove. He also spoke on how human beings were benefited because of Manas . Dr Lahkar appealed to teachers' community to senitise the students and the community in general for the purpose of eliciting their active involvement in protection of rich biodiversity of Manas landscape.
Getting an opportunity for participating in such an innovative training programme the participating teachers expressed their happiness and gratitude towards originations. They requested for holding more such teacher training in nearby areas. More than 35 participants attended the programme including representatives of local conservation organizations.
