Annual General Meeting of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva

The second Annual General Meeting of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva was held on Feb 10, 2012 in Sonapur, Guwahati in the presence of almost half of its members. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Society Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti. It approved the annual reports and accounts for the period 2012-13. The members appreciated the organizational works done by the Co-ordinator cum Treasure of the Society Pradip Hazarika. A stock taking was done of the Society’s works since inception.

The meeting expressed great concern over the non-inclusion about life and philosophy of Srimanta Sankaradeva in the curriculum of the present education system. Srimanta Sankaradeva’s name has been used by different people only for commercial gains, the meeting noted with concern. The Society decided to distribute free leaflets among school students in future as per capability of the Society. Its official website www.sankaradeva.com has helped a lot in teaching the young generation about life and works of the saint, the members said. The Society is also managing www.bordowathan.com and www.barpetasatra.com.

The meeting discussed the pathetic condition of the artists involved in Sankari painting and sculpture. It decided to explore means to offer scholarships to such needy artists and also to felicitate them. The society has already started the process by giving aid to Budhindra Nath Borpathak of Majuli. Many valuable treasure of Sankari art have been lost due to careless handling, the meeting noted. It expressed concern that the government scheme for manuscript conservation has been discontinued. The need of a good archive of Sankari art objects was stressed upon by the members. They felt that the Government should offer due recognition to the senior Sattriya artisans.

Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva will publish more literature about life and works of Srimanta Sankaradeva, especially in language other than Assamese for more promotion of the saint, it was resolved in the meeting. It has already published English translation of Srimanta Sankaradeva’s Bargeet under the title ‘Great Songs’. A Hindi biography of the saint is now being contemplated for publication by the Society.

Several members took part in the discussion about the future plans of the Society. They were Shyamkanu Mahanta, Mridu Maucham Bora, Amal Mahanta, Dr Buljit Buragohain, Rupam Das, Nataraj Das, Nafisa Hussein, Anjana Tamuli etc. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti expressed confidence that Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva would succeed in making Srimanta Sankaradeva known globally.
