Talent Award for Kokrajhar girl

Dr. Phani Sharma Commemorative Talent Award for Sports for the to a promising sportsperson of the state. Year 2012 held on Auguast 23 at Anuradha Cineplex, Guwahati. This year’s award was given to Pwilao Basumatary, a promising Boxer of from Kokrajhar. The award carried a onetime grant of Rs.1,00,000.


The event was attended by the Chief Minister TarunGogoi as the Chief Guest, Minister of Panchayat& Rural Development, Environment & Forest, Rockybul Hussain as the Guest of Honour, MLA of Guwahati East Constituency Capt. Robin Bordoloi as the Guest of Honour. MLA of Thowra Constituency Sushanta Borgohain, Director of Sports, Assam GauravBothra and noted Educationist Dhirendra Nath Bezbaruah and the members of Dr. Phani Sharma’s family were also present in the function apart from around 500 strong gathering from different walks of life and sports fraternity.


Dr. Phani Sharma Welfare Trust was constituted under the guidance of Late Dr. Phani Sharma during his last years keeping his family members as members of the Trust.


The main thrust of the Trust was to facilitate the positive growth of sports talent in the State and keeping in view of this objective the Trust instituted a scholarship to sportspersons. Late Dr. Sharma’s wish was that the money should go to young players who have talent and coming from economically weaker section of the society from the State of Assam.


The fund for the Trust is generated from the contribution of a small percentage against ticket sold at Anuradha Cinema.


After the demise of Dr. Phani Sharma in June 2007, the Trust members decided to have a bi-annually “Dr. Phani Sharma Commemorative Talent Award for Sports” where /- (Rupees one lakh) to a young and promising sportspersons, preferably from economically weaker section of the society will be awarded.
