Award to Ajit Baruah

The Nijara Kavi Sailadhar Rajkhowa Memorial Award committee has selected eminent Assamese Poet and Critic Ajit Baruah for the 2007 Nijara Kavi Sailadhar Rajkhowa Memorial Award.

The award, instituted to keep the memory of Sailadhar Rajkhowa alive and to acknowledge the contribution made in the field of Assamese verse or drama, carries Rs.12,000 in cash and a citation.

The award will be presented to Baruah on December 17.

Irked at increasing lawlessness among autorickshaw drivers in the town, the residents of Raha town now seems to be in the grip of fake driving license holders for a couple of months as many auto-rikshaw, tempo and tata-magic drivers are seen plying their vehicles holding these fake licenses. The residents of Raha town are fed up with the sub-standard construction works of drains in the Raha bazaar road. The drains which had been a long time demand of the residents of the town, are being constructed under Public Works Department (PWD) at a cost of Rs. 70 lacks.According to the residents, the drain will collapse within a short period of time because it amply shows the bad quality of work allegedly done by the contractors. “ The contractors are using sub-standard materials and the concerned engineers of PWD department are turning blind eye towards the matter and totally fail to check the illegal practice”, the residents said to this correspondent.The residents further...

The Raha unit of All Assam Students’ Union ( AASU ) today took out a rally at Raha on Thursday, in protest against the frequent power cut at Raha and its neighbouring areas. The rally started from PWD Inspection Bunglow and went through the Raha bazar road.
