Theft at Ganesh temple in Dispur

Heavy presence of security forces seems to have proved a futile effort to ensure safety and security of the people. Valuable properties worth Rs 5 lakh was looted from the Ganesh temple by thieves in Dispur on Wednesday. The incident took place in the mid night when it was raining outside. The thieves barged into the temple breaking the shutters and looted gold and silver which kept inside the almirahs. The thieves also stole an umbrella installed with the idol.


The incident came to light on Thursday morning and the temple and committee and devotees called it an utter failure of the government to ensure safety of life and properties even in Dispur. Dispur police have already registered a case.

APA cadre arrested in Tamulpur

Security forces averted a major disaster in Nalbari district on Thursday when a hardcore Adivasi Peoples’ Army cadre was arrested. SC to decide on fate of Mahendra Das

The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the fate of death convict Mahendra Das on Thursday. 4 ULFA men arrested in Sivasagar

Sivasagar police have arrested 3 pro talk ULFA cadres on extortion charges in the hear of the town. Identified as Ashim Bora alias Pankaj Gogoi, Mukul Saikia and Jiten Gohain, they were arrested when they were on the way to extort money from a businessman at the Rong ghar Chariali. Grenade explosion in Guwahati

At least five people sustained injury when suspected ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place in front of the Assam state BJP office in the busy Zoo Road at around 6-10 in the evening. According to eyewitness, the grenade was hurled from inside a Tata Sawari leaving at least two persons injured who were rushed to the GMCH. The injured people include a auto driver and a taxi driver. All Women Health Check-up Camp at Press Club

The city based NEMCARE Hospital in association with Guwahati Press Club has organized an all women health check-up camp on March 4 next. The health camp will start at 10 am and continue till 2 pm. Organized on the eve of International Women's Day (March 8), the camp will be conducted by a group of lady doctors of the hospital. The basic objective behind the camp is to bring all women journalists and wives of working journalists for an exclusive health check up for gynecological and other related problems of women. The lady journalists and spouses of working journalists are requested to participate in the camp.

Himanta hints at varsity renovation mood

The Assam government is all set to renovate the universities within the next few months. Disclosing this education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government has a set of long term and short term measures to modernize the varsities. Addressing a convention of the vice chancellors in Guwahati on Tuesday, Dr Sarma said that the teachers problems and demands would also be looked into. Governor JB Patnaik along with senior officials of the various department were present in the meeting. He also said that the upcoming state budget would give more stress of high education.
