Green Marathon at Bokakhat on June 5

Aaranyak, a society for conservation in Northeast India, in collaboration with Bokakhat District Master Athletic Association, Assam Forest Department and Bokakhat Civil Administration is planning to celebrate the World Environment Day, June 5, 2012 in a unique way. On the occasion of the World Environment Day, the organizers in partnership with several local organizations have decided to hold a half Marathon from Bokakhat to Kohora in the early morning of June 5.


The marathon, unique for this region is named as Kaziranga Green Marathon, where participants and volunteers will run for a cause to promote nature conservation and inculcate love for wildlife and nature amongst the students and youth as well as in the masses. ‘Running for a cause’ is the first green marathon in the region and the organizers plan to take this as annual event and promote the same to a national and international marathon in near future.


The organizers informed that the prizes for the Marathon will be- 1st Prize Rs. 10,000, 2nd Prize Rs. 7,000, 3rd Prize Rs. 5,000 and seven Consolation Prizes. The winners will also receive a certificate of merit as well as all registered participants will receive a certificate of participation.


Interested participants should apply to the organizers with their short biodata and health certificate on or before May 30. The organizers also decided not to charge any joining fee this year. Participants from the northeast region shall only be eligible this year.


Using the Kaziranga Green Marathon, the organizers, collaborators and partners would like send conservation message to the people in general and they are hopeful that it will attract the attention of the people from all walks of life to come forward and join the wildlife conservation movement in the region.


The organizers will hold side events like rallies, mass jogging for common people, street drama, songs on environment theme, tree plantation and other related activities alongside the Marathon to convey conservation message to the common people.
The event has already attracted attention of a number of Marathon runners in the state and the organizers have already received good response from the sponsors.

Security forces seized a huge cache of plastic explosives from three youths who were on their way to target a power station in Dhemaji district on Saturday.According to police, the three youths, sped away on their motorcycles, when signalled to stop during a routine check near the Panbari border outpost under Gerukamukh police station.They were caught and arrested following a chase after three packets of plastic explosives, five packets of fuse wire, six fuses and daggers were found in their possession.Identified as Pranendra Wari, Nakesh Narzari and Hemkanta Narzari, they were targeting the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation at the Gerukamukh dam site.

Over 50 people have been injured when an ATSC bus overturned in the outskirt if Guwahati on Friday. The accident took place when the Assam State Transport Corporation owned bus on its way to Guwahati from Barpeta, was trying to overtake a truck when it overturned and rolled down the road to a nearby field in Nayanpur area.The condition of five injured was stated to be critical. They were admitted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, while the others are being treated at the Hajo Primary Health Care centre.
