Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

A special court in Delhi on Saturday has remanded sacked education minister Ripun Bora, his aides Ramesh Maheswari and journalist Mukul Pathak to judicial custody. The court will hear on Monday a bail petition filed by Ripun Bora who was arrested on Tuesday last along with his associates Ramesh and Mukul from New Delhi and Guwahati respectively while they were trying to bribe a CBI officer with Rs 10 lakh. On Wednesday, the court sent the first two the CBI custody. Meanwhile, all the three have been sent to the Tihar jail. Yet another rhino was found killed in the Kaziranga National Park on Friday. Poachers, who killed the rhino have already taken away its horn to reach the rhino poaching tally to 24.According to information, the body of the one-horned rhino, slain about three days ago, was found on Friday in a water body at Singimari with its horn swan off. Two ULFA cadres have been killed during a police, Army joint operation in Bhujkuchi area under Tihu police station in Nalbari distirct early in the morning on Friday. According to information, two pistols and an Austrian grenade has been recovered from their possession. Details are awaited.
