Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

A woman was killed and several others were injured as police men from the Dergaon based Police Training College clashed with local people. The clash began initially with as few businessmen and later it spilled to the local people who have blocked the National Highway 37. This has made thousands of vehicles remain stranded. Police have arrested two youths in Morigaon after they looted more than Rs 77,000 in cash from a State Bank of India branch on Wednesday.According to information, the two youths namely Amal and Munna from Rangiya snatched Rs 77,430 in cash from an employee of the Assam State Electricity Board who was three in the queue to deposit it. A CBI special court on Wednesday has remanded sacked Assam education minister, his associates Ramesh Maheswai to three days police custody while CBI prayed for more time to investigate the case relating to his attempt to hush up a murder case by offering a hefty Rs 10 lakh bribe. Assam education minister Ripun Bora has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in New Delhi while he was there in the national capital. According to information, the education minister was arrested in connection with a Rs 10 lakh bribery case. Mr Bora was picked up at his residence from Mothura Road. Sources say he was arrested while he was trying to bribe the CBI officer which was probing a murder case of Danial Toppo. Interrogation is on. Amar Asom journalist Mukul Pathak as also been arrested with Mr Bora. Mukul tried to bribe the CBI men on behalf of the minister.
