People from Assam, who have made Kuwait their second home, are all set to celebrate Rongali Bihu this year with even more fanfare than ever before, under the aegis of Asom Association Kuwait, which was established and registered with the Indian Embassy, Kuwait, in 2009. This Organization formalized the celebration of Bihu in the State of Kuwait, and became instrumental in showcasing the rich culture & tradition of Assam. In the 3rd AGM held on 12th February 2011, a new Executive Committee was formed with Sri Anup Bora as Hony. President and Sri Bijan Goswami as Hony. General Secretary, to lead the activities of organization through the year 2011-12.
Over the past few years, the Assamese community in Kuwait had the opportunity to enjoy the enthralling performances by the likes of Zubin Garg and Manas Robin, who brought lot of glitz and color to the festivities here in in this part of the middle-east. This year the community is all set to sway to the music and melodies of yet another great singer from Assam – Shmti. Shanta Uzir. She will be accompanied by her Music Composer husband Sh. Bhupen Uzir. The cultural evening set for the 13th May, will be enriched by her Bihu songs along with her other famous hits. The venue for the ‘Shanta Uzir Nite’ will be the famous “Al Murjan” Banquet hall of “Hotel Crowne Plaza”, where performances from the local Assamese community will add variety, color and enthusiasm amongst the community.
Earlier, the onset of Bohag was celebrated by the Assamese community here by organizing a day long festivities of ‘Khel-dhemali’ and ‘ Bhoj’ in the Fintas Park, located in Mahboula, Kuwait. Members along with their children participated in the fun games and contests and the winners were suitably awarded with prizes and gifts.
Among the notable fresh initiatives of the Asom Association Kuwait, was the formal launch of a website www.kuwaitotasom.com to showcase and highlight the activities of the Organization. Members have enthusiastically responded by making this virtual forum a window to all that the organization stands for. Appropriately, the Assamese community has strived to create what the name of the website suggests Kuwait-ot-asom i.e an Assam in Kuwait.
Police claimed to have averted a major string of strikes by ULFA on the eve of the Independence Day after recovering around seven bombs from Guwahati on Friday.
According to information, six powerful bombs have been recovered from a hill near Basistha bordering Meghalaya at around 10 in the morning during a joint operation by police and army.
before that a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from Sadiya which were believed to have been kept ready to explode during the Independence Day celebrations. Investigations are in progress.
There isa no let up in the over all flood situation in Assam where surface communication still remains disrupted in the worst hit Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district. The situation took a grim turn on Thursday when the floodwater breached National Highway 52 at three places and the rail line at two places after the incessant rain for the past few days. The district administration, however, is on a drive to evacuated the affected people to safer places. More than 100 villages in Dhemaji were inundated while in Lakhimpur district, the Kakoi river burst its banks at three places, affecting ten villages.

This has forced police to gear up to dela with this hardcore team of women ULFA cadres. What is more disturbing is that the women cadres are bomb experts who are joined by their counterparts in NDFB. Jiadhal River Basin: Breached on the embankment on Jiadhal at Nepali Pathar and Adarsha Gaon point at the wee hours of 13th August 2009 has severely affected numbers of villages of Dhemaji Development block. The Assam government is taking a slew of measures to battle with the killer swine flu which has already taken a toll of 17. Addressing press conference, Assam health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said 100 doctors are undergoing a two day special training in Guwahati to offer efficient treatment. He said these doctors would be dispatched in various places. Separate isolation wards would be set up one each in the three medical college hospitals in Dibrugarh, Guwahati and Silchar by Thursday, he said adding that these isolation wards would be available in Jorhat, nagaon, Tezpur, and Kokrakjar.

A 'Long March' by hundreds of Bangladeshis protesting the Tipaimukh dam project at the trijunction of Assam-Manipur-Mizoram has forced the authorities to put BSF on alert. According to information, BSF have been put on alert as 12,000 agitators from Bangladesh advanced towards the country's borders. The 'Long March' was kicked off in Dhaka on Saturday. The marchers are heading to Sylhet, 272 km northeast of Dhaka, where they would reach on Tuesday and then proceed to the Indian border. Sylhet district borders Assam and Meghalaya.
