Assam bleeds before Assembly polls; 8 BSF jawans killed, 5 Congress men injured

Assam bleeds again. Bombs and bullets threatens to bury the hope of peace in the poll bound state. After a brief silence, the anti-talk faction of NDFB and ULFA roared again. Eight BSF personnel were killed and 5 Congress men have been injured in two seperate strike by the banned insurgent outfit on Monday.


At least eight BSF personnel were killed and the same number injured on Monday in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Kokrajhar district. Th e Bodo outfit used automatic weapons to ambush the convoy of the BSF in remote Ultapani forest area near the Indo-Bhutan border.


The BSF jawans were killed on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Some of the eight injured jawans were rushed to the Hospital at Bongaigaon, while others were taken to Kokrajhar civil hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Bijoy Kumar, S K Sharma, Arabinda Dere, Bolaram Lamba, Santa Ramthree, Naresh Kumar, Kuber Bora and Hira Singh.


A combing operation have been launched by the security forces, including the Army along the Indo-Bhutan border, to nab the culprits. The patrol was on way from Bangladoba in Chirang district of Assam to Ultapani in Kokrajhar when it was ambushed.


Hours after this attack, ULFA lobbed a powerful EID at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati leaving 5 perosns injured. The incident took place at around 6-55 in the evening with a huge sound when party spokesman Mehdi Alom Bora was sitting at his chamber. Kalyan Gogoi, Akhsyay Rajkhowa and Ranjan Bora were also left injured in the blast. Mehdi Alom Bora’s condition is critical who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.


Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who arrived in Guwahati from Delhi rushed to the GMCH immediately after the incident and visited the injured persons. Gogoi also visited the incident spot and instructed the district administration to firmly deal with the situation. Several other political parties also have criticized the banned insurgent outfit for the blast.


Meanwhile, ULFA has claimed the responsibilities of the blast and threatened to continue these attack. In an e-mail statement sent to media, Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said that this attach is simply a message to Congress. The blast took place a day after the ruling party announced the names of 118 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.


It may be noted that ULFA threatened to target the Congress parties in rank and file for splitting the outfit. But the government downplayed the threat.

Massive operation in BTAD

An all clear like operation awaits BTAD areas against NDFB-S after the Bodo militant outfit killed 8 people in four different attacks within a period of 24 hours.According to information available with assamtimes, additional para military forces are expected to arrive in the troubled torn areas to deal with the situation.    DGP Khagen Sarma is also scheduled to leave for Kokrajhar to assess the situation. Throw out Cong: Ramdev

Yugaguru Ramdev tore apart Congress governments both in Delhi and Dispur alleging utter misgovernance and corruption.Talking to reporters at the GMCH Auditorium during his brief visit to the city, Ramdev said that the country should  immediately get rid of the ruling party.He further said that the Congress-led at the Centre never wants Assam to be developed and that the need of the hour is a new non Congress-government.Earlier talking to assamtimes at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, he said that Narendra Modi is capable prime ministerial candidate for BJP.      

Violence mars bandh

Violence seems to have marred the 24 hour bandh called by several organizations in protest against the recent Ramphalbeel incident.Bandh supporters in Rangiya set on fire a Maruti 800 carrying school goers on Monday morning. The driver was beaten up by the supporters. Local residents rescued the school children from the vehicle. 

14 held for shoot out

Police have picked up altogether 14 people in connection with the Ramphalbeel shoot out where 5 people were killed and two others injured on Saturday night.According to information, these were captured from two different places in Kokrajhar district. Police interrogation is going on.NDFB-S militants shot dead five Hindi-speaking passengers of a Jonai bound bus in Ramphalbeel in Kokrajhar on Saturday forcing the security forces to launch a combing operation in the entire BTAD areas.

BPF rally for peace

Thousands of people hit the streets in BTAD areas on Monday in protest against the orgy of violence carried out by NDFB-S that killed 8 people within 24 hours. Led by Bodoland Peoples’ Front, the protesters asked the militants to stop attack on innocent people and to allow the peace prevail in BTAD areas. Transport minister Chandan Brahma also participated in the procession along with other BPF leaders.

Special assistance !

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is expected to seek more central assistance for the state when he will attend the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday. To be chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his official residence at 11 in the morning, Gogoi is likely to raise the plight of a number of infrascture projects in the state.Dr Singh is expected to review the major infrascture projects in the entire region. DoNER minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar, union finance minister P Chidambaram are also scheduled to attend the meeting.The prime minister has already asked the ministries to expedite the implementation of all the north east projects.

CM to meet Montek

Protest against BTAD violence

A hail of protests in the form of bandh seems to have crippled normalcy in the BTAD areas on Monday. Several organizations have enforced 24 hour bandhs in the BTAD areas on Monday in protest against NDFB’s killing spree where 8 people died and over 10 have injured in four different incidents of attack on innocent people.Life remained paralyzed in the entire BTAD areas following the 24 hour bandhs which began at 6 in the morning on Monday. shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed while the vehicles of security forces were seen plying on the roads.       

Amrit tenders apology

Amrit Cement has tendered unconditional apology in the face of mounting protest of its recent diktat over the Assamese language in its official functionings.In a statement, the cement company regretted the earlier notification which oozed protest across the state.
